I notice this sense of falling behind correlates closely on the heels of hosting a game and tapping out a long battle report. Both require a lot of work. These two efforts can leave my energy levels depleted for a few days. Last week's Agnadello game with Richard (see Agnadello, Rematch) is the latest such example.
Before I had a chance to catch my breath, another Agnadello battle played out on the table in a rematch on Tuesday. Another interesting and exciting battle whose tale is yet to be told.
Battle of Agnadello |
I will dig up my playtest copy of Bryan Ansell's The Rules With No Name to see what I remember from hosting gunfights all of those years ago. I have been making character cards and a QRS and should be prepared to host a few remote games in a week or two. Rather than historical, big battle scenarios, we will try our hands at something more lighthearted and Hollywood. Tentatively, the plan is to host a few cross-group remote games. I think it will be a fun change of pace for all involved. Hopefully, I can get up to speed on the rules quickly enough to present a seemingly smooth game.
Besides gaming, there are two GWS2024 analyses in work. Preliminary data wrangling is complete. Now, just need to write up the findings.
Among the books arriving in-house over the holidays, one title delivered last week was Ford and Hutchinson's, The Fundamentals of Tabletop Miniatures Game Design. While weighing-in at 241 pages, the book is a quick read containing a number of interesting ideas and thought-provoking commentary. For me, the first section, Miniatures as Medium, especially deserves further exploration and counterpoints before delving into the remaining two sections.
What about Bavarians? Oh yeah! I ended 2024 with a satisfying flourish of painting activity that will be detailed once I get around to the Year in Review painting round-up. Figures are stacking up at the photo booth but I managed to push out a 23-figure regiment of Bavarian infantry today.
Foot figures are Lancashire Games led by a Eureka mounted colonel. Lots more SYW/WAS units mustering out soon including British, French, and Spanish.
Until next time...
"Anyone else suffer from too many ideas and not enough time or energy to tackle them all?"
ReplyDeleteI thought that was the standard state of a war gamer lol.
It may, indeed, be a universal trait!
DeleteGreat looking unit Jonathan!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michal!
DeleteYes that is the number 1 reason I have problems finishing things! I either have so many things I want to do that I end up doing nothing or I start something, but immediately think of something else causing me to lose interest in what I'm doing slowing progress to a crawl.
ReplyDeleteYour Bavarians look great btw!
Christopher
At times, it seems like an "analysis paralysis" more than losing interest in any one facet of the hobby. I have so many thoughts building up in my head until "Blam!" the system shuts down. Glad you like the Bavarians!
DeleteWhat Codsticker said 🙂 Neat looking Bavarian battalion the light blue and yellow just pops and looking forward to reading how Agnadello III went.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Phil! Tuesday's refighting of Agnadello was actually #4!
DeleteEven I can't keep up 😂
DeleteYou are not alone!
DeleteYes, I think your affliction is pretty common amongst wargamers Jon! I am not too bad at sticking to painting one thing and only buying more stuff when I have nearly finished everything in hand, but that doesn't mean I am not constantly day dreaming about what I want to do next!
ReplyDeleteTha Bavarians look very attractive!
Yes, I am constantly daydreaming with thoughts from many topics rolling around in my head. I did manage to paint way more than purchased in 2024. Glad you approve of the Bavarians!
DeleteEcho Codsticker as well!
ReplyDeleteFor me there are the current projects and the "want to do's" and the "temptations" ....
Which of those jumps into the forefront depends on many things; time, current motivation, what's still to do...and inspiration! The latter is often linked to what I'm reading, but can be prompted by a film, a TV programme or something random!
For example, currently faced by flat Swiss, Gensdarmes and Landesknechts staring at me in Primer....I am researching Pavia, but reading "The Sidi Rezegh battles" (S. African Official History of Crusader), but thinking about Post-Soviet imaginary republics and FIW!
Neil
Thanks for the feedback, Neil! Looks like many of us face the same hurdles and constraints to overcome in taming our Wargaming Lives.
DeleteI think Codsticker summed it up quite succinctly. There is never enough time. But it sure is fun.
ReplyDeleteLovely Bavarians Jonathan.
It sure is fun!
DeleteVery nice Bavarians. Maybe too many games going on at the moment? Take a couple of weeks off to clear your head or just give some a cursory write up and leave others undocumented. Looking forward to the cowboy inter group games mind you, so no slacking off on that front!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mark! A cursory write up for some games may be the way forward. I often consider that approach but once I dive in, I want to include more detail, and the report expands to many pages.
DeleteSeeing the gunslingers out on the table with be fun and a very long time in coming. Having an inter-group rivalry will be fun too!
A very colourful unit, the blue and yellow uniform certainly pops. It sounds like your wargaming cup overflows, and I would agree battle reports do take a while to write up.
ReplyDeleteThe Bavarian uniform is a favorite. Writing battle reports is a lengthy process for me. Usually, they take much longer to write than playing the game.
DeleteI have only put together a couple, but AARs take a lot more effort than first appears. Trying to remember the sequence of events and editing it down to just the highlights while keeping a coherent narrative can be exhausting, which is why I always admire your results.
ReplyDeleteAs for projects, I try as much as possible not to get distracted and complete everything before moving on to the next. I find it just too difficult to go back and try to remember where I was and how to actually tackle the figures and models I was previously working on. That said I have three 18mm ECW armies just awaiting the cavalry and an ongoing 28mm Napoleonic French project that will probably never be fully completed due to the number of figures still to be completed.
Lawrence, yours is the encouragement that I sometimes need to press on! Relieved to see that writing BatReps is hard others as well.
DeleteYou have a lot of projects on the horizon too. Good luck with them all!
A wonderful looking unit Jon!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ray!
DeleteI don't think I've felt like I've had too many ideas at once. Maybe not enough ideas at times. But I can understand things piling up and feeling in need of a break.
ReplyDeleteWith respect to the Bavarians, I'm glad to see you're in the cornflower blue camp. I chose that shade instead of the dark blue in a lot of sources.
Yes, I went with Cornflower Blue for the uniform. It may have been darker blue earlier but I prefer the lighter blue. If I was fielding WSS Bavarians, the darker blue may have been the choice.
DeleteYou certainly have your hands full Jonathan with a great number of projects on the go. Always a good problem to have, although a frustrating one sometimes.
ReplyDeleteIf there is any frustration, it is only brought about by my inability to get as much done as I would like. Perhaps I am slowing down a bit?
DeleteThe Bavarians look lovely, great uniform. Looking forward to the gunfighter games, a thing I always fancied doing but doubt I will get round to it. Too many thoughts, too many plans, not enough time, sounds about right!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Donnie! The gunfighters have been boxed up for more years that I remember. Getting the figures out and onto the table will be fun.
DeleteNot enough time! I am late, said the rabbit before he disappeared down the hole. Great looking Bavarians, Jonathan. You're not alone in the planning overlapping dreams. But if we give up on our dreams, what makes the planning worth doing.?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joe! Planning and dreaming is one side of the same coin. The other side of the coin is finding time and energy to execute.
DeleteI am always buzzing with things to do, some of which never come to fruition and then I get annoyed that I am not getting on, while actually being busy anyway.
ReplyDeleteWe have a common enemy…ourselves.
DeleteLovely work on those Bavarians Jon and a good choice with the cornflower blue:). I certainly suffer from too many ideas and too little time, with lack of energy also creeping into the mix, certainly at this time of the year with the shorter daylight hours. If I try to do too much, I just hit a wall, so now it's a mix of stuff as and when I feel in the mood. I'm aiming for a few more games this year and not worry too much about the painting, but wait until I'm in the mood to do it.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I appreciate the assessment of your time/motivation challenges. I am not alone.
DeleteSplendid Bavarians Jonathan. Juggling the various aspects of the hobby is something I frequently fail at, I find the majority of my time these days dedicated to only painting, not in itself a problem as I need to figures to play the games.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Meic! Yes, one needs painted figures to game and you have picked up the pace on the painting front of late.
DeleteNice looking Bavarians Jonathan. Like you I often have too many ideas in my head, currently working through Quar, Franco Prussian War, Burrows & Badgers and Republican Romans to name a few
ReplyDeleteThank you, Neil! Looks like many of us tend to bite off more than we can chew.
DeleteBavarians look great, I really like that shade of blue that they used. I must add some Bavarians to my WAS/7YW collection..
ReplyDeleteYes of course, always too many half-baked ideas that I don't get round to - albeit at a much lower level of achievement than you! I am trying to make a resolution to do more games with figures I've already got..while also doing more painting!
the Italian wars games were fantastic, I look forward to AAR posts, but there's no rush, no pressure.
Thanks, David! On the AAR front, I read "no rush, no pressure" as hurry up and get with it! Finished up a GWS analysis this morning so a BatRep from your game is on deck as one of this weekend's task.
DeleteHaha, no, I genuinely meant take your time! A good story is worth waiting for..
ReplyDeleteWell, hopefully I can concoct a good story!
DeleteLovely looking unit Jon….as to overload it certainly happens to me. My rule is if it feels like a chore it can probably wait while I do something more fun 😱
ReplyDeleteThanks, Matt! There are times when I need to steer toward something more fun.
DeleteI'm finding it difficult to stop painting napoleonics at the moment, so I'm just giving in, it might look like lazer focus but it's just enjoying myself as Matt says, I might have just bought 250 28mm Bavarians so no stopping on the Napoleonic front, even if almost all my French are at least assembled and primed, I hope my Bavarians come out as well as yours, they look great!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain caveadsum1471
I know! You have been cranking Napoleonics out with great speed! "Might" have bought 250 Bavarians? Very funny!
