Happy New Year!

Happy New Year fellow wargamers!

While there are several 2024 battles to chronicle, newly painted units to parade, and battery of year-end wrap-ups to write, I begin the New Year with a prize drawing!

What is the reward for entering the drawing?  The winner receives a one year's complimentary membership to the Society of Ancients (SoA).  If you have an interest (whether general or specific) in Ancient & Medieval warfare and wargaming the period (3000 BCE to 1500 CE), give the SoA at the link above a browse.  The SoA publishes a (mostly) bi-monthly magazine, Slingshot, that is crammed full of interesting content.
Membership also includes expanded access to the SoA's active forum that is, likewise, packed with interesting content.  Much of the forum's content is available to members only.
Browse both the SoA website and forum to get a flavor for what is available.  If you have never given the SoA a try, now is an excellent opportunity.

If interested in a complimentary membership, reply in the comments declaring your entry into the drawing.  If more than one entry, a random drawing will follow.  Get your entry in by Sunday, 05 January.

Good luck and hope to see one of you as a new member on the forum.

  3. Happy New Year Jonathan. Don't put me in the draw. There are others that would benefit more from your generosity.

  4. Well you can blooming well chuck my name in the pot for starters. Not sure who gave them the okay to use my picture on the front cover of their magazine!

    1. You're in! There was discussion on the forum whether that was a photo of the Slingshot editor out on the prowl for article submissions.

  5. Best Wishes for the New Year. That is a fantastic gift for the draw, very generous. I have to admit to allowing my membership to lapse, so would feel churlish accepting such a gift, so I would respectfully ask to be kept out of the draw. Good luck to all who do enter.

  6. But then it turned out that the then editor was a bald chap and not a hirsute Viking at all. We had been had!

Can I, as SoA forum moderator both congratulate Jon on his generosity and also echo the benefits of the forum. We finished the year with over 15,000 posts on nearly 1500 topics, so it's quite lively. It's a great opportunity to learn from fellow enthusiasts and we have a lively interest in archaeology alongside the wargaming.

In addition to the forum and Slingshot, members can also join our wargames championship. Fascinatingly structure to be rules agnostic and to allow games fought in different contexts to be added to your score. And then there are the trading discounts. So, sieze Jon's generous offer with both hands folks.

  8. Happy New Year Jonathan! I look forward to your formal review. No need to include me in your very generous offer of the draw...others would benefit more.

  9. Happy New Year, Jon.
The SoA Membership offer is a great (and very generous) initiative. I’d thoroughly recommend anyone with even the faintest interest in Ancient and/or Medieval warfare to comsider joining. I’ve been a member off and on since about (?) 1976, and it had been highly valuable.
Please DON’T add me to the draw, as I’m already in, and I’d prefer the freebie to go to a new face.
    Cheers!!!

  10. Happy New Year Jon! A very generous offer and I am more than happy to be included in the draw...given my recent painting activities, I would doubtless benefit enormously from some of the information available via the SoA.

  12. Happy New Year Jonathan. Slingshot is a magazine I have often meant to sign up for as it seems to have been going as long as I have, but then forget. Please include me in the draw as it might be the only way I actually remember to subscribe.

  27. Happy New Year, Jon! Thanks so much for the many excellent games you hosted over the past year, always great fun!
I'll 'pass' on the draw - looking at the backlog of 'Arquebusier' and 'Foreign Correspondent' issues I have, plus commercial wargame magazines and huge pile of military history books, I think I have plenty to be going on with! Great idea, though, and very generous.

  29. Happy New year Jonathan and thanks for all the posts from the last year! I'll have to pass on your generous offer as I am like David time poor with a pile of reading probably larger than the lead pile!

  30. Happy New Year to you! And very many thanks for all the fascinating blogging you have been doing. No to the draw from me (I absolutely must not find another diversion in my life at the moment!) but it sounds a great offer. I hope to be in a position to join myself in the next few years.
