For now, the guns are silent as anticipation builds for the clash to follow. What I expected to be a four or five player contest has been reduced to three, stalwart players. Each player with take command of at least a dozen units. While two players will split one of the armies (probably splitting the Franco-Spanish Army), the third player will have sole command of the opposition (Austro-Piedmontese Army) with about two dozen units. Hopefully, the large number of units under command will not tax the players' command span as they refight this battle.
Battle will be fought on a hex grid.
Impressive set up Jon 👍
ReplyDeleteGlad you approve!
DeleteVery nice! Will the hex grid play any part in movement and/or ranges? Or is it just to help orientate remote players?
ReplyDeleteNeil
Movement and combat are both regulated by the hexes. Hexes do aid in relaying orders from players to umpire and ranges/movement rates are easily identified from the webcam view.
DeleteIt looks like it will be fun to play through.
ReplyDeleteStephen
I hope so! Of course, if interested in giving this a try, drop me an email.
DeleteFine looking command base and a mighty fine looking set up, shaping up for some cracking action for sure.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Phil! I hope the battle holds up to expectations. I have a few, new twists to throw at the players in this one.
DeleteWow - excellent! Let us hope your new commander and recruits do not suffer the "freshly painted regiment syndrome" in the game. I guess it's not quite the same if you're umpiring, but the principle stands.
ReplyDeleteYeah, as umpire, I have no vested interested in seeing a particular army succeed or fail. Since neither the Spanish nor Piedmontese have seen action before, someone will come away with honors of surviving their first battle. It's a Win-Win!
DeleteExcellent command stand and set up
ReplyDeleteThanks, Richard!
DeleteSplendid looking command and set up! Looking forward to the the AAR!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Much appreciated, Iain! I am anxious to see how this battle develops too.
DeleteAs always, a very impressive looking set up, Jon. Looking forward to reading the AAR and seeing if the defending side can hold enough objectives by games end to scrape a win!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Keith! I hope to see both armies out on the attack in today's action.
DeleteViewing the set up, I expect you will have a barn burner of a game. Looking forward to the AAR.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope this setup produces an entertaining game for all.
DeleteAnother inspiring table. I normally would say that the lace wars rule in terms of wargame eye candy, but in your case, I find that all of your collections and tables present equally impressive scenes.
ReplyDeleteEd, you are too kind. Thank you!
DeleteBeautiful command and great table Jonathan!
ReplyDeleteWarm regards
Double thanks, Michal!
DeleteThat is a splendid command figure, and quite an honour to be the first to take the part of King Emmanuele ! I hope I can live up to it and do justice to the cause of Piedmont-Sardinia against those wily Gallispans... looking forward to it very much, if nervously!
ReplyDeleteThanks, David! You did a good job breaking him in and he survived the battle!
DeleteA great setup and a lovely command stand Jonathan. Our gaming is winding down for the summer and I'm missing it already.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Do you not game during your summer months? While the holiday season consumes game time, I usually can get in a few games before year-end. I have figures to paint too.
DeletePeople normally head off for a beach escape this time of year, us included. It hit 35/95 degrees today and, even with airconditioning, it is much more pleasant near the coast as the see breeze blows away the humidity.
DeleteSounds like a perfect way to spend the holidays. Here, at least El Niño is keeping the snow at bay for now.
DeleteLooks to be an interesting matchup. Good luck
ReplyDeleteThe game was a good one replicating the historical flow of battle. Do you have time for a game over your Christmas Break?
DeletePromising set up and superb command stand!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Phil!
DeleteSuperb set up there Jon and an awful lots of troops to try and break through for either side. Certainly looking forward to the AAR to see how it unfolded and how the scenario and victory conditions worked too:).
ReplyDeleteThis is a large game, no doubt. The battle saw a successful breakthrough with heavy losses. I think both scenario and victory conditions worked to drive a historical narrative. How this was accomplished is a story for another time.
DeleteI would have given more gold to the king. But the battlefield is looking so well. I'm very much excited how the Piedmont army can win.
ReplyDeleteMore gold? Well, I may have to go back in to give him more bling!
DeleteLate to the party on this. I like the command stand. Is the King ignoring the old grenadier? Speaking of which, that is a popular pose. There is one like that in the Heroics and Ros SYW Austrian grenadier pack. I assume it's a NCO.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the grenadier is pointing out that the Spanish are emerging from Madonna dell’Olmo in force and that he requires reinforcements? Clearly, the King ignores those requests until too late to act.
DeleteExcellent looking set up. Looking forward to seeing how this one plays out
ReplyDeleteThanks, Neil!
DeleteExcellent figures and an excellent looking bash too.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ray!
