Next Up, Mortimer's Cross

With three days of gaming on others' tables last week, time to bring the action back to my own table.
Since the WotR collection is still out after a handful of Solden Hill games, I decided to drum up a historical battle for the next game.  After some exploration, I settled upon the 1461 Battle of Mortimer's Cross.
Still working on the details of the scenario but the table is set to help inspire completion of the Battle Briefing.
First game is slated for Monday.  Note that battlefield is back to a hex grid as opposed to the open table as seen in the last game.  Hope to muster six players.

  1. This should be an interesting scenario, with rough terrain on one flank and a river on the other limiting the options for manoeuvre.

    1. Not much room for maneuver so it will be straight at 'em! hopefully, the game will provide an interesting narrative, at least.

  4. Best of luck with this one. After a very extensive Mortimer's Cross project, organised by the Battlefields Trust, and lots of archaeology, we now know less for definite than we previously thought we did. I read a recent two page account of the battle in a recently published reputable popular history book that is complete fiction. On the positive side no one can prove youare wrong. More or less.

    1. After the first few die rolls, we are all essentially writing a fictional narrative anyway, aren't we? I received a more recent paper this afternoon from a follower on the battle by Foard and Partida. I will be reading through it with great interest.

    2. That would be the account to look at.

    3. Thanks both for the heads up on the Foard and Partida. As Graham says, good to see a good indepth study that blows away imaginative interpretations and restores us to knowing virtually nothing, except that the battle probably wasn't where we thought it was.

    4. Anthony, our common acquaintance, Adrian N. passed the paper on to me.

  5. Your WoTR figures looking grand as ever, but with not much room for manoeuvre in this setup.

  7. Very cool Jonathan! I predict a bloody battle where someone is disappointed by the outcome. Seriously, a good looking pair of forces. Looking forward to at least one replay!

    1. Thanks! “Mortimer’s Cross” is not a contraction of Mortimer IS Cross? Maybe he will be after this battle rips up his land.

    2. lol... he certainly will be! Maybe he can do tours and set up a shop for souvenirs.

  10. A nice little taster there Jon:). As others have said, a pretty much straight up battle, due to the restrictions of the terrain. As with many of the WotR battles (and others for that matter) we know very little about what actually happened, other than who were the nominal victors and who lost there heads!

    1. If possible, there is even less know about this battle than others and battle placement has at least three versions.

  11. A hard slogging match appears on the cards there Jonathan. A splendid looking layout as usual.

    1. The roads are made from a rubber like material that I have used for about 40 years.

  16. Looks to be another lovely game, Barnet, where I grew up, had the battlefield move at least three times while I lived there!
