With three days of gaming on others' tables last week, time to bring the action back to my own table.
Since the WotR collection is still out after a handful of Solden Hill games, I decided to drum up a historical battle for the next game. After some exploration, I settled upon the 1461 Battle of Mortimer's Cross.
Still working on the details of the scenario but the table is set to help inspire completion of the Battle Briefing.
This should be an interesting scenario, with rough terrain on one flank and a river on the other limiting the options for manoeuvre.
ReplyDeleteNot much room for maneuver so it will be straight at 'em! hopefully, the game will provide an interesting narrative, at least.
DeleteLooks brilliant. I'm really looking forward to playing this.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Looking forward to seeing how you fellas tackle this one.
DeleteThis should be an interesting encounter
ReplyDeleteI hope so!
DeleteBest of luck with this one. After a very extensive Mortimer's Cross project, organised by the Battlefields Trust, and lots of archaeology, we now know less for definite than we previously thought we did. I read a recent two page account of the battle in a recently published reputable popular history book that is complete fiction. On the positive side no one can prove youare wrong. More or less.
ReplyDeleteAfter the first few die rolls, we are all essentially writing a fictional narrative anyway, aren't we? I received a more recent paper this afternoon from a follower on the battle by Foard and Partida. I will be reading through it with great interest.
DeleteThat would be the account to look at.
DeleteThanks both for the heads up on the Foard and Partida. As Graham says, good to see a good indepth study that blows away imaginative interpretations and restores us to knowing virtually nothing, except that the battle probably wasn't where we thought it was.
DeleteAnthony, our common acquaintance, Adrian N. passed the paper on to me.
DeleteYour WoTR figures looking grand as ever, but with not much room for manoeuvre in this setup.
ReplyDeleteNot much room for maneuver. Players will need to be creative.
DeleteNice looking set up Jon.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteTable and figures look very fine, Jon....hopefully, the game lives up to your expectations!
ReplyDeleteThanks! My only expectation is to provide an enjoyable and challenging game.
DeleteVery cool Jonathan! I predict a bloody battle where someone is disappointed by the outcome. Seriously, a good looking pair of forces. Looking forward to at least one replay!
ReplyDeleteGlad you approve! Three games are scheduled thus far so you are bound to see at least one replay.
DeleteGreat looking game Jonathan.
ReplyDeleteI hope Mortimer gets his cross back 😁
Thanks! “Mortimer’s Cross” is not a contraction of Mortimer IS Cross? Maybe he will be after this battle rips up his land.
Deletelol... he certainly will be! Maybe he can do tours and set up a shop for souvenirs.
DeleteGood idea to get in on the tourism trade.
DeleteLooks like it should be a great game.
ReplyDeleteTime will tell. Too bad you must miss out.
DeleteJust one of those things, Jon.
DeleteThere is always next time.
DeleteA nice little taster there Jon:). As others have said, a pretty much straight up battle, due to the restrictions of the terrain. As with many of the WotR battles (and others for that matter) we know very little about what actually happened, other than who were the nominal victors and who lost there heads!
ReplyDeleteIf possible, there is even less know about this battle than others and battle placement has at least three versions.
DeleteGreat looking game Jonathan!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteA hard slogging match appears on the cards there Jonathan. A splendid looking layout as usual.
ReplyDeleteI expect a hard fight with only one way out for the victors…through the enemy!
DeleteLovely looking setup Jon 👍
ReplyDeleteThanks! Much simpler than your complex battlefield offerings.
DeleteLooking good. By the way, what are your roads made of?
ReplyDeleteThe roads are made from a rubber like material that I have used for about 40 years.
DeleteLets hope the Lancastrians fare batter than previously!
ReplyDeleteNeil
With me not in command of the Lancastrians, there is a chance!
DeleteLooks nice, Jon. I gather it's Postie's Rejects playing on Monday - they will surely 'get stuck in' with enthusiasm..
ReplyDeleteYes, Postie’s Rejects take to the field on Monday.
DeleteLooks to be another lovely game, Barnet, where I grew up, had the battlefield move at least three times while I lived there!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Battlefields, they are-a-changin'.
Deleteoh! a battle that I've actually heard of, versus your usual repertoire of obscure engagements. 😁
ReplyDeleteYou’ve heard of this battle? I’m shocked!
DeleteLooking forward to this one Jon, be very interested to see the report.
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteI join those looking forward to this one. Go the Yorkies!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, James
Thanks, James!
