Ashigaru Teppo in 15mm

Seems like I am jumping all over the place with respect to many projects seeing action at the painting desk.  That perception is true.  However, today I muster out the first of three units for the Samurai Battles project.  First off the work desk is a 19-figure stand of teppo.  As always, figures for this project are from Peter Pig.  Excellent sculpts and a joy to paint.
In an attempt to clean up The Lead Pile, I have been toiling through the boxes to see if some boxes can be better organized and consolidated.  Among the stacks of boxes and bags of figures, I uncovered two orders from Peter Pig containing Feudal Japanese.  Those bags had filtered down into parts almost unknown and certainly almost forgotten.  Quite fun to find lost treasures!  Both orders were relatively new orders picked up from recent sales.  Sorting through the bags of figures, enough figures were found to form one unit of Ashigaru teppo, one unit of Ashigaru spearmen, and four units of Samurai mounted cavalry.
While the teppo form up and march out today, two of the Samurai cavalry units are finished.  A third cavalry unit is in work.  Expect to see the first two Samurai cavalry up next in the photo booth.  Nearing almost six years since the collection was out on the parade ground (see: Samurai Battles Project in Review), a display highlighting all of the work completed, thus far, seems a good idea.  I wonder to what extent the project has grown in the intervening six years.  I may be surprised.   Hopefully, pleasantly.

Hi Jonathan. I cannot paint 15mm at all- though I can really appreciate the work you've put in on your 15mm Samuri- well done indeed. However I do enjoy painting 25mm. Cheers. KEV.

Now, they are nice...the hexagonal double bases are striking.

Always interesting to see what you pull from the lead pile next Jonathon! I also like your new style basing...will you be using these on all future collections and what is the logic behind the change?

They’re lovely looking figures well-painted as usual. You certainly have a lot of diversity in your lead pile!

Lovely work Jonathan! Samurai Battles CCA?

As always another lovely looking unit and it's a pleasant surprise to see what you come up with each time. A positive pot pourri of projects you have on the go!

Your Projects are really a great mix. But maybe that's very good to stay motivated. I'm just painting 3 periods simultaneously - however never with your speed.

Hi Kev! I enjoy painting both 25s and 15s. Painting 25s is often easier on my aging eyes but slapping paintin onto a 15mm figure is not much different.

Thank you for your comment!

Thank you very much , Graham! I like the basing too. A bit unorthodox for some but it suits my needs in this situation.

Keith, what I pull from The Lead Pile is often a surprise to me as well!

I only use this double hex basing for this project. I play Samurai battles on both a two inch and four inch grid and this works for both conventions.

Much appreciated! I have undergone years of diversity and inclusivity training...

Thanks! Yes, these are for Commands & Colors Samurai Battles. You have a good eye.

Thank you very much, Steve! Yes, always a pot pourri of projects at the work desk.

A good mix of projects, no doubt! Variety does encourage my painting motivation.

THanks for your comments, Andre!

Thank you, Iain! I have not pushed you over the edge into a Feudal Japan project yet?

Jump as much as you like Jonathan! Great looking figures!

A splash of blue to great effect. The Peter Pig sculpts are very kind to the painter.

Jonathan Freitag said...

Thank you, Ray!

This shade of blue is my favorite. It makes any figure "pop" just a bit. As for PP figures being kind to the painter, this range is especially kind.

It's great to see such variety JF.

I fully understand the problem with jumping around. My blog may show some consistency of late, but behind the scenes it's anything but! Unit looks great btw!

The PP sculpting is perfect for painting as it's nice and bold, which helps as my eyes are not as good as they used to be.

Jonathan Freitag said...

Glad you enjoy the variety!

Jumping around between projects is good.

Your latest Sherman is sure a masterpiece.

Indeed, the Samuari range is well-suited to easy painting for aging eyes.

Great work as always Jonathan!

One of those eras I know little of but find exceptionally attractive. Don't think of it as jumping around. Think of it as a nice change of pace!

Jonathan Freitag said...

As always, you are very kind, Michal!

"Don't think of it as jumping around. Think of it as a nice change of pace!"

is a very pragmatic approach. Thank you, Ed!

Nice work, Jon!

Dean, you are very kind! Thank you.

Thanks, Peter! Nundanket tossed an easy one right over the plate. I couldn't help myself. I will be here all week. Please tip your waiter...

Lovely work on these Jonathan and I like the combination of the dark colours with the sky blue. It really works well. I'm also glad to hear your comments with regard to Peter Pig as I have a Peter Pig Parthian army (which is not easy to say with a mouthful of chips) ahead of me, once I can find where I have stored it.

Jonathan Freitag said...

Thank you, Lawrence!

If the PP Parthians are anything like the PP Samurai, you will be very pleased. I look forward to seeing your Parthian army fall under your brush. When finished you must hold a Peter Pig Parthian Parade!

I will, pronto!

Lovely unit and gorgeous blue!

Jonathan Freitag said...

Thanks, Matt! There are worse things to be forced into doing during lockdown.

Thanks!

Looking really good Jon!
It’s a good number of figures on the bases to make it look like a unit. 😀

Jonathan Freitag said...

Thanks, Stew! The more figures, the merrier.

I was just thinking you have a large range of superb figures.

Its like xmas when you find those parcels that you had forgotten all about. This period in 15mm I imagine would look pretty impressive with all those banners.

Jonathan Freitag said...

That I do, George! So many projects, so little time.

Jonathan Freitag said...

It is like Christmas and when this project is out on the table the kaleidoscope of banner colors make the table look quite festive.

Aly Morrison said...

Very nice Jonathan...
Lovely paint jobs ...as always.
And a parade to look forward to...😁

All the best. Aly

Jonathan Freitag said...

Aly, you are most kind. Thank you! A parade to look forward to, indeed! A few more units for the project to finish and then a parade.
