Horses for Courses

The horses in this case are Christian heavy cavalry. The courses are the battlefields of Spain.

Now, few are likely surprised that a battery of Reconquista games would not spark thoughts of fielding more units for the 28mm Reconquista project.  That is too easy.  Of course it did.  As I formulated a plan of action to bring Zallaqah to the table, I pawed through The Lead Pile to see what could be dug up.  I knew I still had some leftovers from earlier excavations.  How many?  Quite a handful, I thought.  Well, 15 heavy cavalry were dug out and brought to the surface for inspection.

A few more heavy Christian cavalry remain to bring to the surface for a later dig.  Perhaps enough for another command stand or two?

All of these cavalry are the HUGE Black Tree Design figures bought many, many years ago when BTD service was reliable and prices cheap.  Ah, for the good old days!  How many years ago?  Receipts show that my last orders placed were in 2017.  That was a long time ago.

Anyway, on to the parade of three heavy cavalry units of five figures each.  Maybe they will see action in an upcoming game?

A couple of handfuls of BTD Christian infantry were extracted from the strata so these 24 fellas might show up sometime soon.

  1. Very finely turned out Jonathan. It is a shame that BTD has become synonymous with shocking customer service.

  2. They are most excellent additions to your medieval collection John - excellent figures beautifully painted (and based!)

  3. Very nice figures there which make for nice units too:). Gosh, I remember BTD from way back when, at a time I was still gaming in 28mm! Such as shame that they went downhill as from memory, they had some really nice offerings:(.

    1. Thank you! Yes, BTD has some very nice ranges of figures. I especially liked the Ancients, Warriors of Islam, and WWII ranges.

  4. BTD fairly recently announced they were improving delivery and clearing backlogs....
Lets just say the announcement was met with some scepticism....
Shame really as they did / do some nice figures.

    1. Well, I will need to see plenty of evidence of a return to good standing! My last order in 2017 ended in a PayPal dispute for non-delivery of goods.

  5. Very nice, I have painted hundreds if not a couple of thousand horses in my time and I still do not like it although I have my own 'quick' method these days. It works for the old three foot rule.

    1. I used to absolutely hate painting tack but now I have come to terms with it.

    1. Thanks! BTD figures feature in several of my 28mm collections. I used to get great service from BTD USA and then it went to pot in 2017. I have not ordered since.

    1. Thanks, Anthony! Yes, most of this collection is made up of BTD figures. Quick calculations show about 80% of both foot and horse are BTD figures. More than I expected.

  8. Lovely looking units Jon, very nicely painted and based. It is a real pity BTD are so unreliable as they have some great ranges of figures, very tempting but the service is that poor that the temptation is easily ignored!!

    1. Thanks! Yeah, I have several of their ranges within my collections. It is too bad reliability has gone down the tubes.

  10. They are lovely figures Jonathan and beautifully done. I have only read all the usual comments about BTD figures but never actually seen any, and they are lovely sculpts. Remind me a little of the dearly departed Renegade in terms of heft and style.

  11. Been a bit since I last dropped by. Good to see you're still steaming along both with your hobby and blogging about it too!
Your knights look great mate. Like how they aren't overly ornate.
BTD were indeed great years ago. Haven't ordered in a long time and have read of bad service - too bad.

Hope all is well in the Northwest sir.

  12. Wonderful figures Jonathan.

While BTD may have bad service at least "Lead Pile Inc" provides fast delivery, cheap prices, and an excellent selection of figures. 😊

    1. Thanks, Mark! I have figures aging more than eight years in The Lead Pile. The Pile is massive, and I do not paint as quickly as you.
