After seeing Sedgwick call off his efforts to break through the Confederate line at Salem Church and skedaddle back across the Rappahannock River (see Sedgwick REJECTed at Salem Church), Matt (wargamesinthedungeon) took up the challenge in Game #2 to lead Sedgwick forward into battle. Game was fought on 20 September. As a reminder, the battlefield map and opening battle deployments are shown in the battlefield photos below.

| Initial dispositions |

| Bartlett takes fire from Wofford as Rebels advance through the dense woods. |
![]() |
| While one of McLaws' guns rains down on Brown's 1NJ, Bartlett orders his men forward into an all-out attack. Rather than see his flank turned as in Game #1, Bartlett takes the fight to the enemy! |
![]() |
| Wofford is driven back into the woods with Bartlett in hot pursuit. While Bartlett's pursuit is checked... |
![]() |
| Cobb's Legion is destroyed and Wofford is killed! |
![]() |
| In the Federal Center and Right, Sedgwick orders a general advance as Browne and Shaler plunge into the woods near Golin run. Wheaton is ordered to cover the center. |
![]() |
| Pressure mounts on Wofford as Bartlett's Federal attacks in the woods continue. |
![]() |
| Outnumbered by about two-to-one, the 16GA and Phillip's Legion dissolve in the heavy fighting. Wofford's Brigade is wrecked! |
![]() |
| Bartlett swings his 96PA to the right. The Rebel Right is turned! |
![]() |
| In Kershaw's attacks, the defenders of the farm throw the enemy back but the remnants of 1NJ are overrun. Brown brings up reserves to plug the gap. |
![]() |
| The gap is plugged and Kershaw is driven off! |
![]() |
| With the Rebels back in the woods, Brown decides not to follow up to pursue into the unknown. |
![]() |
| Wheaton brings his brigade up in the center. |
![]() |
| Kershaw sends two more regiments forward to Williams' Farm, while, to the right, Bartlett attacks into the woods against an already wavering 15SC. |
![]() |
| The 15SC is destroyed and the 3SC Battalion is thrown back. |
![]() |
| Federal attacks are relentless. The Rebels are driven back again. |
![]() |
| While Brown maintains pressure to the front... |
![]() |
| Bartlett continues his rampage against the enemy right. |
![]() |
| Another of Kershaw's regiments is destroyed in the fighting. |
![]() |
| Now Wheaton brings his brigade into action... |
![]() |
| and the enemy is scattered. Kershaw's Brigade is wavering... |
![]() |
| and then breaks! |
![]() |
| The entire Rebel Right has collapsed with Wilcox only clinging on by a thread. Federal artillery sees to it that Wilcox has had enough! Wilcox is wrecked! |
With three Rebel brigades now wrecked, the Rebels must retire from the field and try to slow Sedgwick's advance down the Orange Plank Road to Lee's flank.
Wow! A decisive Federal victory for Sedgwick and Matt. My poor Rebel army was completely manhandled by Sedgwick's XI Corps. Looking at the detritus of battle, there was hardly any action north of the OPR. Rather than seeing Bartlett dismantled in total as in Game #1, Matt put Bartlett on the offensive and he never let up! Wofford was completely mauled by Bartlett and when Brown (and at the end) Wheaton joined in, the battle was decided quickly.
The Butcher's Bill tells the sorry tale for the Confederacy. Unit losses were more than three-to-one against. What a bloody game. Very impressive victory, Matt! I wonder if I can repay this pounding when we swap sides and take to the field again?

Great job, Matt, and a really entertaining game! Game duration was a little over three hours and we played four turns.

Matt's attack was certainly relentless. He must surely qualify for sobriquet "Sledgehammer"?
ReplyDeleteGood idea!
DeleteGreat win for Sledgehammer. Commiseration Jon.
ReplyDeleteChris/Nundanket
Yeah, Matt, really put the hammer down!
DeleteGreat game! We’ll be looking forward to the rematch.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alexey!
DeleteThat is quite a difference in casualties for this one. The Federal troops do seem to start off with quite a significant numerical advantage though, which is fair enough as they are attacking, and Matt put it to good use.
ReplyDeleteEven though many of our troops were underused on the north end of the battlefield, Matt certainly made the best of what he brought to bear. His attacks against Rebel Left were relentless. I kept the results of this battle in mind when the tables were turned and Matt and I swapped sides.
DeleteWow, that was a pretty convincing win for Matt - it will be interesting to see how you go with the Union command, Jon - and if Matt has any ideas on how to defeat a reprise of his successful tactics!
ReplyDeletePretty convincing, without doubt! Matt handed my head to me on this one. Can I return the favor next time?
DeleteSpectacular game. The federal attack was relentless
ReplyDeleteThank you, Neil! Bartlett never let up.
DeleteThe Rebs to a bit of of a pounding there Jon, interesting replay of the battle, Matt certainly gained a famous victory.
ReplyDeleteI took a pounding, for sure, and yes, Matt gained a famous victory.
DeleteGood example of a hard fought battle of the war. Matt certainly adhered to the principle of objective in the battle.
ReplyDeleteJonathan, once again I thank you for the "circles and arrow " in the photos, the entries were like the paragraphs printed on the back "of the 8 by 10 glossy photos" from the song.
You are welcome, Joe! The arrows help me reconstruct the battle narrative too. A hard-fought battle but one mostly going Matt's way.
DeleteA good, event packed game with lot of grinding action in those 3 hours and four turns, the consequence no doubt of powerful armies starting close up to each other. It felt bloody while reading and the Butcher's Bill just confirmed it.
ReplyDeleteLots of grinding action, no doubt, but most of that action saw the Rebels being ground into dust! Having armies start within artillery range helps to bring the battle on quickly.
DeleteFantastic game and report Jonathan. No wonder you took so long to write it up, your head must still be spinning 😁
ReplyDeleteI hope you got your revenge in the rematch!
Thanks, Ben! This took so long to write, in part, because there have been three other Salem Church battles fought since this one. Rematch results will have to wait for another time as I have a F2F battle to chronicle before that time.
DeleteWhat a great game report and a rather surprising result. I don't think I've ever seen such disproportionate losses in an ACW battle, the Union concentration at decisive points must have been overwhelming.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Martin! Well, you are not the only one surprised by the result! The next installment sees more even losses.
DeleteSplendid report, Jon! What an absolute steamroller of an attack from Matt—he really earned that "Sledgehammer" nickname! The photos with the movement markers made it dead easy to follow all the grinding action. Looking forward to seeing if you can turn the tables on him in the rematch!
ReplyDeleteAll the best, Andy
Thank you, Andy! I was overrun, for sure. Matt was unstoppable on this day. Good to see that the BatRep was easy to follow.
DeleteGreat looking report like as always!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michal!
DeleteWow, Matt showed us how it's done! I know now what I did wrong. I should have poured everything I had to the left!
ReplyDeleteMatt certainly showed us how to attack with Sedgwick! I am still shocked that the Rebel right collapsed like it did. Our game was so close and could have gone either way. I still need to sit down, curate the photos, and chronicle our battle account.
