Scope Creep?

With the 18mm SYW project expanding to include armies present in the War of Austrian Succession, War of Polish Succession, and a British Army in the early stages of development, expanding the theatre to include the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion seems only natural, right?  Scope creep or simply a reasonable expansion?  Well, this expansion seemed a natural byproduct to me.
Having said that, the first Jacobite units muster out from the painting desk.  First to muster out are Lord Ogilvy's Regiment (blue flag) and Gordon of Glennbuchat's Regiment (white flag).  Both of these 23-figure regiments represent Lowland regiments.  Highlanders are up next.  Figures are Old Glory foot led by a Eureka mounted colonel.  Yes, painting Highlanders in tartan is up next.  After the Jacobites receive a half-dozen units or so, it will be time to crank up the production line to push some Government troops through.
Lots of other projects are seeing activity at the workbench so British will be in waiting until I return to painting 15mm figures.
Tuesday saw a recommencement of hostilities on the plain at Pharsalus.   After seeing my four-game Caesarian sweep of Pompey at Pharsalus two weeks ago, Kevin dropped in for a rematch and lunch.  This time, we swapped sides.  I commanded Pompey and Kevin guided Caesar.  As in the previous outing, games were fought using Commands & Colors with 6mm armies.  In yesterday's four-game series, Caesar came away 7-1, 7-3, 5-7, 7-3.   In Caesar's 5-7 loss, Caesar was killed in combat.  Over the eight-game series, Caesar came away 7 and 1.  Pharsalus seems a tough task for Pompey.

With the New Year barely out of the gates, games are already on the docket for Saturday, Monday and Wednesday.  Starting the gaming year off with a bang!  Monday's game will feature a return to the WotR as a refight of Wakefield is in the offing.  Plenty of work to do to design and develop a scenario before then.  Which theory of the battle will be presented?  Stay tuned.

Next time, perhaps my annual painting review.

  1. Well, your scope creep mirrors the real life scope creep, so it is absolutely fair enough! If you are going to do Dettingen and Fontenoy, why wouldn't you do Falkirk and Culloden too?

    1. "Fair enough" is good enough for me! Why not expand to Falkirk and Culloden, indeed! Thanks for weighing in!

  2. Great looking Lowlanders Jon. Sounds like a great all round start to the year with the 6mm games played and anothwr 3 games next week! Are you trying to beat last years games total already?

    1. Thanks, Ray! Unlikely to beat 2025's 97 games but I seem to be off to a strong start. We will see how long this lasts.

  3. Expansion why of course, you know it makes sense, and a very fine start to it too. A very big bang on the games front too!

    1. Well, this move made sense to me, but others may think me daft.

  4. Fine work on those wee laddies for sure Jon! I'd say a reasonable expansion, as they can be used pretty much as is for any of the risings, from say 1685-1745, and a bit beyond should you so wish. We've had fun playing a sort of '45 over the years, using HoW, with the Jacobites doing well to start with, then as historically, suffering rather badly later on. Lots of fun though:).

Good to see the games ramping up on your side of the pond, ditto getting in a FtF game or two over C&C.

    1. Mucha appreciated, Steve! I vaguely recall seeing your Jacobite amendments for HoW on the old forum. I wonder if I saved those off anywhere to use as guidance.

    2. Dave did the leg work, with myself adding in the odd useful (hopefully!) comment or two. Keith then polished them, so fingers crossed they are accessible via the FB group. If not, drop me a line, and if I can't find the file, I can send a scan over to you.

    3. Well, I do not use FB. I will quick my files and if nothing turns up, I will send an email.

  5. These were a bit of a surprise to me, but a logical extension and they will make for some interesting games. Great work on them Jonathan, making the rather dour lowland uniform come to life and look interesting. Beautifully done.

    1. Thank you, Lawrence! I waffled on whether or not to expand and finally threw caution to the wind. Really, it was Graham's remote Jacobite games from a few years ago that pushed me over the edge.

  6. The Jacobite look very smart in their blue bonnets. It is very easy to extend eighteenth century armies in all directions, we've all done it.

Although my preference is to play Command and Colours game on larger Hexon tiles with figures, I do sometimes also use 6mm figures on the original boards as you have done. It works well and looks good, I just wish the terrain tiles weren't so slippery!

    1. Thank you, Martin! You are correct. The tiles can be a bit slippery on the game board. I made up some hill hexes a long time ago to go with the miniatures game. I should have pulled them out.

  7. Well of course you can't have a SYW collection without without a follow on Jacobite at some point. Seems perfectly logical to me. Unit looks great btw!

  9. One could argue you are maximising your SYW investment rather than scope creep.

  10. Ohh, we love some Jacobite Rebellion... Looks superb. Can't wait to see these chaps in action.

    1. Thanks, Darren! I need some more painted figures before these toys are out on the table.

  11. I think starting with the Jacobite Rebellion might be too narrow, but adding the Jacobites to an already mature mid 18th Century collection, such as yours, is a nice expansion ...and perhaps was inevitable, anyway :)

    1. Logical and measured, as always, Ed. Perhaps inevitable. I think you nailed that!

  12. Scope creep is perfectly natural, like the look of the Jacobites

  14. Excellent paint job, Jon. It strikes me that you are just seeking to complete the whole mid-18th century European theatre. A very logical step. Usually you are very organised and plan ahead. So, I'm sure that you have all your next steps already traced out - Russians, Ottomans etc.... I'll wait for the publication of your plan. No scope creep here... you know what you're doing.... don't you!!!

    1. Thanks, Richard! Well, I do have some Russians but no Ottomans. Thoughts of adding Ottomans have not entered into any plan, yet. I seem to be working my way through the 19th Century too with Prussians beginning to muster out.

  15. Great looking figures Jonathan and the hive mind seems to have given a resounding "Yes!" to the increase in scope.
