Having painted a small collection of Star Wars Legion figures about five years ago, I struggled to dig into a set of rules to get these figures onto the gaming table. I briefly looked at the Star Wars Legion Core rules that came with the base game. I also considered giving Xenos Rampant a try. Neither prompted me to jump into action. Making a commitment to getting the collection to the table has been at a standstill for the past five years. I simply could not bring myself to diving into a new set of rules.
All of this changed a couple of weeks ago when Peter (Grid based wargaming) offered to host a remote game using Squad Hammer Core rules and his Star Wars Legion collection in a remote game. Peter played a solo game using these rules about a month ago (see Star Wars Game Report). With a mentor to walk me the through the game mechanisms, how could I pass up this generous invitation? Well, I could not especially since Peter crafted an interesting scenario to help my introduction into this yet unexplored genre!
Peter's game is on deck for Thursday.
Nice looking figures, be good to finally get a rule set to allow you to use them Jon, really good offer from Peter, look forward to seeing how it all goes.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Hopefully the rules will be easy to pick up and I can get my figures onto the table sometime.
DeleteIt will be good to see some Sci Fi on your table Jonathan. Good luck in the game.
ReplyDeleteThose are some great looking figures as well.
Glad you approve of the figures! We will be using Peter’s figures since he is hosting the game from NZ.
DeleteThis is good news Jon.....were you doing SW as a way of introducing your grandson to gaming....or am I thinking of another blogger?!
ReplyDeleteYou have a good memory! Yes, I started this project as a way to introduce grandson to figure gaming. He is at an age now to actual understand and possibly enjoy playing with the toys.
DeleteLooking forward to the game and your figures completed so far look splendid.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to today’s action too!
DeleteI await the game with great interest…
ReplyDeleteAlan Tradgardland
Me too!
DeleteHope the game goes well. I've also struggled to settle on a ruleset for my SW legion collection. Galactic Heroes is fine for small skirmish games, but I don't get to use the bulk of the collection
ReplyDeleteMy collection is relatively small so a skirmish style game with suit fine. I want something easy and relatively fast. Peter says these rules do that and it is played on a grid.
DeleteI wander how many collections are sitting unused due to not being able to find rules that suit one’s taste?
ReplyDeleteWonder🙄
DeleteProbably many!
DeleteYour SW mini collection looking great! Waiting for a game with new rules!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michal!
DeleteI remember the figures, and very nice they are too. I'll look forward to your impression of the rules.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun to dig the figures out and give them a review.
DeleteHi Jon. Lovely looking figures, as always. What struck me though was your comment about needing to dig into new rules in order to play a game. I might be wrong, but unless there is something particularly unique about Star Wars (and I will read Peter's AAR) this would be a small unit skirmish type game with leaders with attributes.... so, Rebels and Patriots? Sharp Practice? The Men Who Would Be Kings? Chain of Command even.... all rules you probably have : )
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ivan, and welcome! You make good suggestions and, yes, I have many of the rules you suggest. I think one hang up is that I really do not know what all of the weapons are or their expected capabilities. I have a learning curve to climb regarding this genre.
DeleteJonathan, nice looking figures, lookin for your experiences with Sci fi. The cote of Stargrave is pretty adaptable for this sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joe! This will be new experience, for sure.
DeleteLovely looking Star Wars figures and glad you've got a ruleset that works for you! I've got Xenos Rampant but still haven't had a game!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
We will soon see how these rules work. I have XR but have yet to try them too.
DeleteMay the Force be with you (sorry, couldn't help it).
ReplyDeleteInteresting shift for your gaming: I've found One Hour Skirmish to be very adaptable (if you want to check out another system to use with these figs).
Interesting shift, indeed! I am stepping into the Dark Side with a Sci-Fi game. Back to historicals very soon. OHW might be a plausible choice too. You are correct, OHW is adaptable to many situations and easy to bolt on additional amendments.
DeleteNicely done. My Grandson is just ‘awakening’ to The Star Wars Universe and I have just built him the Revel kit Snow Speeder to start him off. Enjoy your game.
ReplyDeleteThanks! If the rules work well, I may get these figures out for a game with my grandson.
DeleteDifferent! You have diverse collections.
ReplyDeleteNeil
Very different! Diversity keeps one from becoming bored.
DeleteImpressive looking new direction, Jonathan.
ReplyDeleteOnly a slight jog around the obstacle blocking my normal path. I will find my way back soon.
DeleteA change is as good as a rest, as they say. And who doesn't like a bit of Star Wars? Nice figures btw.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be a change, alright! Thank you.
DeleteGreat and surprising collection, Jon.
ReplyDeleteThere are more, Ray! This only a sampling of the collection.
DeleteI like your SW collection. Never heard of that rules set, but I'm eager to see how it plays out.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I never heard of the ules either until Peter pointed them out. They are a free download from Wargames Vault.
DeleteInteresting, look forward to it.
ReplyDeleteThe game was an interesting one!
