Gunslinger in 54mm

Well, I planned to share two bases of skirmishers for the 28mm Peninsular War project but became sidetracked.  What caught my eye was an unpainted, 54mm gunslinger in pewter from Tin Soldier.  I painted a 54mm Landsknecht (see Landsknecht) years ago and never proceeded to paint any more of the figures.  This week, I remedied the situation and put the gunslinger model into the painting queue.
This fellow is a gunslinger in sombrero packing two six guns.  Serious looking hombre, I think, and posed for action.  Sculpting is very fine with superb detailing.
Gunfighting in 54mm sounds fun, doesn't it?  I would need to find a few additional figures to pull that off but I have a start.

  3. An impressive looking figure and all the detail is wonderfully painted.

  4. Great job. I have a bunch of Mexicans for Dead Man's Hand, stereotypes from all the old movies, we won't see the like again.

    1. Thanks, George! I fear there may be a time when many of our wargaming periods may become verboten. Are we at that junction already?

  6. Very nice, your painting has done justice to a wonderful sculpt. The colours really come together well.

    1. Thank you, Norm! The red vest and sky blue cummerbund provide a good contrast, I think.

  7. Lovely figure.....but the terrain will be a challenge

  8. Great idea Jonathan, you'll probably only need half-a-dozen figures and some building facades down either side of a main street. Easily doable. Cheers Greg

    1. Hi Greg! Yes, it should be easily doable but I already have a largish collection of Old West figures in 25mm.

Glad you like the gunfighter, Peter!

  10. Nice choice of colours, and a great job on this one. It would be an interesting project, although having to purchase the 54mm terrain when you already have it in 28mm would be enough to make me think twice.

    1. Thanks so much, Lawrence! I like the color combs too. Yeah, the possibility of Old West gunfight gaming in 54mm looks remote.

    1. Iain, I didn't see it coming either! Glad you like him. You should give the Assyrian a go, I think.

  12. Beautiful work on this figure Jonathan. I had a huge collection of Tamiya figures when I was a teenager that I always had a half formed plan to use for skirmish gaming...it never came to fruition of course and they are all long gone. I have to agree with Iain's sentiment too...I actually have the Stadden (I think) "Scotland Forever " in 90mm...so large that the pattern of the kilt is sculpted onto the figure...its been in my possession for about the same period as Iain's Assyrian...I really should try to sell it and use the proceeds to buy some smaller figures that I might actually paint!

    1. Thank you, Keith! I had a buddy when I was an early teen who had a large collection of 1/32 Tamiya armor and figures too. At that time, we were modelers and not gamers. It would be great to have that old stuff back. I suggest you paint your 90mm Stadden...

  13. Fantastic work on this large scale figure, Jonathan!

  14. That turned out well! I'm deeply tempted by 54mm scale - turns out, I enjoy painting larger figures. The only thing that stops me is the cold fact that I lack the space to store or play with them . . . .

    1. The gunfighter turned out well to my eye too. You could paint a few 54s for display only without the need to collect enough for gaming. I enjoyed painting this larger figure too.

  16. Very nicely done. I can see the appeal of painting the larger figures as able to get more little details visible and bring the figure to life. 😀

    1. Thanks, Stew! Moving up in scale is a pleasant change of pace. Much less difficult to see the details with my old eyes.

  17. That’s a lovely looking miniature Jonathan...
I also enjoy painting the odd 54mm toy soldier I have a Chasseur a Cheval trumpeter waiting impatiently on my desk...😀

    All the best. Aly
