Peter, at Grid Based Wargaming..., among all of his other wargaming irons in the fire, has been looking for a ruleset to bring his 6mm WWII collection back to the table. The rules currently under review are Lock n Load Publishing's Tank on Tank WestFront. Despite the title, Peter commandeered these rules straight away and pushed them to the Western Desert.
Since the rules are downloadable from the publisher's website and only contain a handful of pages in length, I was able to read through the rules and familiarize myself with both rules and Peter's scenario beforehand. With the rules being simple and geared toward fast play, Peter guessed that we would get in two games into our allotted gaming session. He was right!
For Game #1, I took command of the counterattacking Afrika Corps near Bir Kalifa. The German objective was to either destroy every Allied unit on table or exit three units off Allied side of the table within nine turns. We used the solitaire rules for Action Point allocation.

At start deployments with Allies holding the high ground.

Germans make a general advance toward the road and Bir Kalifa. Wespe is positioned on the high ground to the rear.

As the Germans gain the road, they attack one of the Grants set up in the broken ground. Combined arms destroys the Grant! Oh! This is a bloody and unforgiving game!
![]() |
The remaining Grant on the Allied right engages a Pz III, The German is destroyed. The German righthand brigade shifts farther to the right.

Action is furious in the center! The Germans lose another Pz III on the road while the Allies lose both an A13 and another Grant!

Desperate fighting continues! Germans lose another Pz III in the center as the German flanking attack sends another Grant to the Dead Pile!

That definitely came across as fast and furious. Was there much in the way of look up tables, or just broad categories of armour and firepower, and one hit and you're dead?
ReplyDeleteThe play was certainly fast and furious. No look up tables and only a few modifiers. Each unit has a Defense Value. After any modifiers, if the attacker's 2D6 is greater or equal to Defense Value then the target is KIA. One hit and you are dead!
DeleteThat was certainly fast, furious and deadly, perfect for a club night when you are short of time
ReplyDeleteExactly, or if you want a light wargame that won't produce a headache.
DeleteGreat idea to split the writing of the battle reports! I will focus on the second game and will I definitely have to add a few arrows to the photos as they are very helpful in telling a story with 6mm games.
ReplyDeleteLook how clear my screenshots are. I had an excellent vantage point and could see the action quite clearly especially given your large and clear unit labels. Your new camera takes excellent video from which to take a screenshot or two. Great game!
DeleteAbsolutely superb action chaps. I could almost hear the sound of panicking crews trying to get the first shot off. A nice set of rules it looks like. and great terrain as ever Jon.
ReplyDeleteThis was a terrific action, Darren but praise for the game and look of it falls solely onto Peter's talented hand.
DeleteA real slog and seemed like it might be a pretty hard task for the Germans to achieve their victory conditions, unless you could use most of the force to mask the Brits and detach three units off to make a run for the other board edge?
ReplyDeleteKeith, stay tuned to see how Peter handles the challenge as the German commander in Game #2. Now that I am familiar with the rules and the timing of the processes, I might play the Germans a little differently.
DeleteJonathan -
ReplyDeleteA rather evocative battlefield! I suspect the scenario is as unforgiving as the rule set. But I read somewhere that tank vs tank clashes were apt to be fast and furious!
Cheers,
Ion
Yes, Peter sets a handsome table and his 6mm basing is first rate. Big labels helped me a lot in unit identification.
DeleteFantastic report Jonathan. A tough battle for the Germans.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading Peter's report.
Thanks, Ben! I look forward to Peter’s spin as well!
DeleteNice to see the 'host with the most' being hosted!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, James
Thanks, James! I have been hosted more than hosting of late.
DeleteGreat looking report Jonathan!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like the report, Michal!
DeleteGreat report, armor so brittle.
ReplyDeleteVery brittle, indeed!
DeleteSounds like a tough scenario but a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Tough scenario for me, for sure! I came close, though.
DeleteFast and furious, you can't argue with that.
ReplyDeleteNo, you cannot!
DeleteThat looked fast and furious. There's a lot to be said for "bang you're dead" rules. And there's justification for it with tanks. Lose a track and you may as well bail out as you're a sitting duck. Fuel line breach, ditto. Dislodged sight, that gun ain't going to be much use.
ReplyDeleteWell done Peter. Interested to see how he plays the Bosch.
