A Mixed Lot of Spanish

Following on the footsteps of the heavy discussion on blogging (whew! that was a lot of commentary!), I turn to something a little more sedate and short.  Of course, I greatly appreciate everyone who took the time to leave your very detailed thoughts on the topic.  This morning, my embedded Reply button seems to be broken on all posts.  Hopefully, this can be worked out.
Back to the painting desk.

Today sees a clearing out of a handful of assorted figures for the Punic Wars.  Making up this nine-figure stand of Spanish infantry are a mix of figures from both Black Tree Design and Renegade Miniatures.  The Renegade figures go into battle wielding the falcata while the BTD figures are armed with javelin.  A nice mixed stand that allows a few bits' bins to be cleared out in The Lead Pile.
On the gaming front, Richard hosted a remote game using the venerable Koenig Krieg rules.  I have two versions of the rules but had not played them.  Richard used an even earlier version!
Richard brought a hypothetical battle to the table using his tiles on a hex adaptation.  I was originally slated as an observer put was press-ganged into taking up the Prussian cavalry wing.  Having never played KK before, it was very good to see these rules in action.  Good fun!
For Richard's battle account, please visit, Battle of Pondeli.

A F2F game is on deck for Saturday morning in a return to the NWF.  On Monday, I host a remote game when the Battle of Wakefield takes to the table.  With holiday distractions behind us, time to start filling up the gaming schedule for the 2026 campaigning season.

  1. Well I will start you off with the first of what may become another 119 comment post :-) (ducks)

Lovely Spanish, I think the initial bright colours muted right back by the wash have just happened to do their own lovely thing. If you did anything particularly different with these, you may need to keep the ‘recipe’ for future continuity of look amongst the army.

    1. Thanks, Norm! I think that the number of replies in the previous post broke a few things. My hunch is that all of the replies cannot be fully loaded and prevents the Replies and Show More links to not activate when using my PC. Embedded replies seem to work properly from my phone.

  2. Nice Spanish! From two virtually unobtainable manufacturers.....
A "PBJ" post after the previous mammoth philosophical debate.....

  3. Forgot to say was a dedicated Koenig Krieg player up to the 1990s - looks very dated now.

  4. @ Neil, glad you approve of my Spanish! A short PBJ post, indeed! The last post and all of the commentary seem to have broken my blog. I reckon that loading all of the comments from the previous post is causing my embedded "Reply" button to never fully load. For now, this method must do.

On KK, computing melee values required pencil and paper. Have not seen that in a long time. Still, the game was enjoyable and the rules worked.

    1. As the umpire I don't have a problem with some maths. In fact, I welcome my brain being kept busy.

  6. Very nice combination of a few left over figures Jon. NWF eh, that will be a bit of a change, I look forward to seeing your report.

  7. Your paint work on those figures is absolutely outstanding. They almost look like museum pieces.

  9. @Richard, you are much too kind on my painting. You handled computations under pressure very nicely. Well done!

  10. I wish you'd stop taunting me with your stockpile of the lovely Renegade figures. They seem to mix very well with the BTD figures so I'll give them another look. Great work on these Jonathan and the basing sets them off beautifully.

  12. @Lawernce, I wish I had more of a stockpile of Renegade figures. Only a few odds and ends remain. They mix very well with BTD figures.

  16. Those Spanish look dead good. I like the varied poses and weapon loadouts.

That reply button isn't working on other blogs I've visited today either... meh.

    2. So it's not just the supreme deity that works in mysterious ways?
Unless of course Google has become the supreme deity? :-)

  22. Lovely work on those Spanish chaps Jon, with the muted/pastel colours working really nicely. The KK game looked good but have never heard of the rules, but they seemed to give a good game. Nice to know the game schedule is up and running, as I feel the need for a game after all my recent painting and figure prep. Nice to see the reply button is active again, after failing across the board yesterday:).

    1. Thanks, Steve! I am surprised that KK is not a familiar rulebook to you. It has been around since ‘82 and seen at least four editions. After time away tending to family matters, it has been good to get back to the painting desk. I have been enjoying several long sessions and making good progress on a number of units. Yes, I am relieved to see that the Reply button is back in service.

  23. Lovely painting and the two makes work well together I think? Thought your last post was interesting but didn't expect the volume of comments, I doubt you did either!

  25. Thos Spaniards look brilliant Jon. Great work.
I've got Koenig Krieg (an earlier version than yours looking at your pic) plus the Festung Krieg (Siege) and Grosse Krieg (Campaign) sets. Never played them but pinched a couple of ideas for old home-brew rules.

    1. Thank you, Chris! Like you, Richard was using the 1982 edition of KK too. I had both siege and campaign pieces at one time. I sold them off and then later bought the rules again!
