The Last of the Po River Battles?

Wednesday saw a return to the Commands & Colors: Ancients' Po River scenario in C3i06 with Scott hosting another in our continuing F2F sessions with three players.  We played six games with each player playing four games with player rotation.  As in the session two weeks ago, Rome came away with victory in all six games!  Yes, all six games!  Another statistical oddity or we are learning how to deal with the Carthaginian Army.  Scott and I made it out of the session with three wins to one loss each.  Kevin came away 0-4. By the time Kevin makes the drive back to Spokane, I am sure history will be rewritten and he will claim victory in all four of his games!

While Scott and I each played the game from both sides of the table, Kevin insisted on sticking with the Carthaginians in all four of his games. That tactic did not work out so well for Kevin. Rome won 7-6, 7-2, 7-4, 7-4, 7-4, 7-6.

intently watching Kevin make his move.
With the Society of Ancients announcing that Cunaxa will be the 2026 Battle Day game, we plan to get an early start in next week's session.

As always, good fun and a new lunch place.
Thanks, guys!

  1. A great set of wins Jonathan! Did you get to hold a triumph?
I guess it is historically accurate as the Romans did work out how to defeat the Carthaginians.
But no going around to Kevin's house and burning it down and sowing the ground with salt! 😂

    1. No triumph and no burning down Kevin's house. Kevin needs a place to host games!

  3. Sounds and looks like it was a great days gaming and what are the odds of Rome winning every game! Super looking miniatures, really nice collection.

    1. The day was great fun! Given that we figure the scenario evenly balanced, Rome winning all six games is 1/64. Scott has a beautiful collection. Next time, you may be treated Persians and Greeks from his collection.

    1. Sometimes, it is better to be lucky than good but “good” helps.

    1. I seem to do better when playing away and games I host are almost always lost.

  8. Nice looking battles, especially with figures instead of blocks.

    1. CCA is even a better game when played with figures.

  9. Sounds a lot of fun Jon, not for the Hannibal lovers though! Do the rules need a tweek, to give the Carthaginians a chance?

    1. No rules or scenario tweaks needed. Before these last sessions, Carthage routinely won two games to one in every session. I think the scenario finely balanced although these results might suggest otherwise.

  10. At last, a post I understand! (Sorry Jonathan, last one had me going "Wha....?" )☺
I think you should hold a triumph - in lieu of the chariot and slave, just paint your face red and go out in the car with your wife next to you whispering "it's only a game of toy soldiers"......☺
Interesting news on Cunaxa, a battle that has long exercised a fascination for me; a refight many years ago (WRG 6th with tweaks - irregular D scthythed chariots) ended with a historical result - Cyrus dead and Artaxerses wounded after personal combat; the greeks suffering 1 casualty from the chariots and being the only ones left in the rebel army.

    1. A lighter post after a heavier one seemed a good choice. We look forward to seeing Cunaxa out on table. Scott’s Persians are newly raised so this will be a good test. In earlier battles with a Persian army, I found it a difficult army to command since I have much less success wielding a missile heavy force.

  11. The result certainly suggests the "Romans" have figured out the right tactics to deal with Carthage....although it would be interesting to see if the 6 0 drubbing could be replicated if you played the same scenario next time....you may all have had enough of the River Po, however?!

    1. Part of Rome’s success may have fallen on Kevin’s hard luck getting a win out of his four-game Carthaginian stand. Having played this scenario nearly two dozen times, we are ready to move on with Cunaxa as the next extended test bed.

    1. Yeah, Kevin deserved to win at least one game but he insisted on sticking with Carthage until he scored a victory. We can be a ruthless bunch.
