Swiss/Italian Crossbowmen from Old Glory

A brief return to 28mm figures in general and the Great Italian Wars project in particular.  Even though I committed to focusing more on 15/18mm painting in 2018, it is necessary to punctuate that effort with a few figures in the larger size.
To that end, one stand of nine crossbowmen depart the painting desk.  These figures are from Old Glory and are drawn up in a variety of garb.  Great looking figures and one of Old Glory's best.

Your job does honour to a beautiful and colorful period, well done!

A very interesting base that makes you want to stare in to it. Delivers an artistic pleasure as well as also being useful for wargames :-)

Jonathan, have just gone back in for another look and really like the tonal range, with what could easily be garish colours, dampened down to look natural. Is it essentially the army painter (in a tin) that is doing that? (I mean as well as you being a masterly painter :-) ).

Very nice brushwork on great looking figures. Some very interesting hats on show.

Great looking hats Jonathan!

The unit certainly provides a variety of colours and figure poses. And as ever - expertly painted.

Love these guys, especially the wide feather brimmed headgear. One of the games being hosted at Enfilade in May will be Fornovo using Pikeman's Lament - one of the Portland guys will be running it. I think most of his figures are OG also.

Good looking group. Old Glory outdid themselves with some dynamic poses in this range.

Lovely bunch of old glory crossbow weilding landsknechts! Really nice job, an outing with them soon perhaps? I'm mostly painting old glory Italian wars swiss at the moment, I may be some time, nice figures to paint i think.
Best Iain

Phil, you are always very supportive!

Norm, your thoughtful comments are very much appreciated!

The colors are bold, are they not? You have a good eye and recognize my modus operandi well. Rather than Army Painter, I use Minwax stain to dampen the colors somewhat.

Thank you!

Thank you! These fellows sport a wide variety of headgear, for sure. Adds a lot of interest, I think.

Not every guy can pull off wearing a hat like these!

A good mix of colors and uniform styles make for an interesting stand of crossbowmen.

Thank you very much for your kind comments!

Fornovo would be fun to see. Take plenty of photos.

Thanks Dean!

Thanks! The Renaissance range along with Spanish-American War are probably my two favorite Old Glory offerings in 25mm.

Thanks, Iain! I sure would enjoy getting them out onto the table for a game. I wager Jake is itching to field his Renaissance army in combat as well. Perhaps this summer?

Great work Jonathan, I really like the colours you have used.

Jonathan Freitag said...

Thanks, Oli! Glad you like the colors.

They look excellent, Jon. As you know, I share the opinion these are some of the best figures Old Glory have done. The Renaissance armies definitely need some tabletop exercise before year's end!

Thank you, Peter! It would be great fun to trot this army out for battle. As most of my projects, this one grew much larger than anticipated. Two more units are working their way through the painting queue.

Those are superbly painted, Jon! I'm glad to see Old Glory looking so good.

Jonathan Freitag said...

Much appreciated, Scott! Gaudy colors and over-the-top costumes make these crossbowmen stand out in a crowd.
