The Guns Are Silent

Sardinian King Emmanuele III's command stand emerges from the painting desk just in time to see action in Thursday's Battle of Madonna dell'Olmo.  Figures are Eureka Miniatures.

For now, the guns are silent as anticipation builds for the clash to follow.  What I expected to be a four or five player contest has been reduced to three, stalwart players.  Each player with take command of at least a dozen units.  While two players will split one of the armies (probably splitting the Franco-Spanish Army), the third player will have sole command of the opposition (Austro-Piedmontese Army) with about two dozen units.  Hopefully, the large number of units under command will not tax the players' command span as they refight this battle.

Following are a few random shots from the table while the guns remain silent.

Battle will be fought on a hex grid.

  1. Very nice! Will the hex grid play any part in movement and/or ranges? Or is it just to help orientate remote players?

    1. Movement and combat are both regulated by the hexes. Hexes do aid in relaying orders from players to umpire and ranges/movement rates are easily identified from the webcam view.

  2. It looks like it will be fun to play through.

    1. Thank you, Phil! I hope the battle holds up to expectations. I have a few, new twists to throw at the players in this one.

  4. Wow - excellent! Let us hope your new commander and recruits do not suffer the "freshly painted regiment syndrome" in the game. I guess it's not quite the same if you're umpiring, but the principle stands.

    1. Yeah, as umpire, I have no vested interested in seeing a particular army succeed or fail. Since neither the Spanish nor Piedmontese have seen action before, someone will come away with honors of surviving their first battle. It's a Win-Win!

  9. Another inspiring table. I normally would say that the lace wars rule in terms of wargame eye candy, but in your case, I find that all of your collections and tables present equally impressive scenes.

  11. That is a splendid command figure, and quite an honour to be the first to take the part of King Emmanuele ! I hope I can live up to it and do justice to the cause of Piedmont-Sardinia against those wily Gallispans... looking forward to it very much, if nervously!

  12. A great setup and a lovely command stand Jonathan. Our gaming is winding down for the summer and I'm missing it already.

    1. Thank you! Do you not game during your summer months? While the holiday season consumes game time, I usually can get in a few games before year-end. I have figures to paint too.

    2. People normally head off for a beach escape this time of year, us included. It hit 35/95 degrees today and, even with airconditioning, it is much more pleasant near the coast as the see breeze blows away the humidity.

    3. Sounds like a perfect way to spend the holidays. Here, at least El Niño is keeping the snow at bay for now.

    1. The game was a good one replicating the historical flow of battle. Do you have time for a game over your Christmas Break?

  15. Superb set up there Jon and an awful lots of troops to try and break through for either side. Certainly looking forward to the AAR to see how it unfolded and how the scenario and victory conditions worked too:).

    1. This is a large game, no doubt. The battle saw a successful breakthrough with heavy losses. I think both scenario and victory conditions worked to drive a historical narrative. How this was accomplished is a story for another time.

  16. I would have given more gold to the king. But the battlefield is looking so well. I'm very much excited how the Piedmont army can win.

  17. Late to the party on this. I like the command stand. Is the King ignoring the old grenadier? Speaking of which, that is a popular pose. There is one like that in the Heroics and Ros SYW Austrian grenadier pack. I assume it's a NCO.

    1. I wonder if the grenadier is pointing out that the Spanish are emerging from Madonna dell’Olmo in force and that he requires reinforcements? Clearly, the King ignores those requests until too late to act.
