2nd Zouave Rgt in 1859

Back to the 1859 project to add a regiment of French Zouaves to the roster.  Figures are the 'old' Old Glory 15/18mm models manufactured and sold by 19th Century Miniatures
The 2nd Zouave Regiment is fielded in three, twelve figure battalions for a total of 36 figures.  During the 1859 campaign, the 2nd Zouaves were a component of MacMahon's 2nd Corp in the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Division.
While another French infantry regiment for the 1859 project is on the painting desk, a number of other units are in work too.  Likely next off the painting desk will be two battalions of Austrian infantry for the 1799 project.  Rather than more Austrians in helmets like the previous offering,  these lads will be mustering out in the old casquet.

    1. Yeah, I am drawn to the Zouave uniform no matter the period. I have one 28m ACW unit painted and one 15mm ACW unit. You bet both are Zouaves.

  5. Besides the nice paint job, I very much like the 12-figure bases. I used to favor 3- or 4-figure bases, but have gravitated towards putting more figures on each base. Is your army based for a particular set of rules, or are they meant to be used for whatever set you decide on?

    1. Chris, as I age, I prefer moving fewer and fewer small stands around on the gaming table. In fact, I prefer single stand BMUs for almost all of my gaming. There are exceptions, though (Impetvs, for example which already fits my basing needs perfectly).

      As for basing practices, I tend to base the figures first and then make the rules fit the BMUs. Sure, backwards by some but it is a visual hobby.

      For 15mm Napoleonics, I use either 12 or 13 figure infantry per stand. With 1859 project, some nationalities field battalions having 12 figures; others have 18 figures. Out on the extreme, my 18mm SYW project fields infantry battalions in 23 figure strength.

      For the 1859 project, I use single stand BMUs based combined with some of the mechanisms in Howard Whitehouse's Old Trousers and Ironsides along with my own ideas.

      You ask an interesting philosophical question.
