28mm Reconquista - BTD Spearmen

The second Impetvs unit is off the painting desk.  This time, one 12 figure block of spear men.  All of the figures are BTD

More units are in the painting queue as I try to play catch-up in the burgeoning arms race with Jake (Jake's latest efforts).  Shifting through the lead pile to plan and organize future builds, I find a shortfall of command sets.  Only enough command remains to field three FP (heavy foot) units.  Sufficient troops are available to field three or four additional heavy foot units but no command.  I guess I will wait for the next sale.  I must have miscalculated my needs with my last order.  Am I the only one to put an order together and later discover that the order placed was in error?  Seems I frequently get the mix incorrect with either shortages or surpluses.

Following the foot spear unit shown above, next off the painting table in the following order will be:

  • 1 x 12 heavy foot spear
  • 2 x 4 archers as skirmishers
  • 1 x 9 crossbowmen

The Warriors of Islam line from BTD is really quite excellent and a pleasure to paint.  When obtained from one of their frequent sales, the figures are comparatively inexpensive at about $1.10 each.

Extra Impetvs Volume 5 arrived from On Military Matters this week and contained within are Army lists for the Reconquista.  The Reconquista lists include:
  • Late Andalusian 961-1172 AD
  • Almoravids 1039-1145 AD
  • El Cid 1060-1099 AD
  • Almohads 1121-1269 AD
  • Feudal Castillian, Leonese, and Portuguese 1050-1350 AD
  • Navarre 1050-1350 AD
  • Catalans and Aragonese 1050-1350 AD
  • Early Nasrids 1232-1340 AD
Quite a variety of armies to field.

  1. Great painting, Jonathan! I really like the variety of colors you've chosen. Great figures as well. Color me green over your Impetus project! ;-)

    1. Thanks, Monty! The color variety really makes this a fun project to paint and is a welcome change from my usual, more regimented, color schemes. Yeah, I really like the BTD figures too.

    2. When I painted Ottomans, I used many colors but I did not use pink. After the army was finished, a blogger in Turkey clued me into Turkish materials that showed pink was commonly used! So hats off to pulling that color in, and that's one reason I paint my armies 2 or more times. I don't seem to catch it all in the first pass!

    1. Thanks, Scott. Are you being tempted yet?

    2. Maybe. I don't really need a new period, though. Doesn't HaT have some 28mm figures for the period? I think I have even painted a few of them.

    3. Yes you have painted some of the Hat El Cid figures. Those are nice figures but I think I prefer the metals. How about you?

  3. I am in a similar pickle keeping my goal organized. I have lots of Infantry painted, but what I need is lots of cavalry. Your units are looking great. I may have to focus on mercenaries so I can justify a few colorful Muslim units.

    1. Luckily, BTD just announced 35% discount on WoI infantry. I'll pick up the missing command without having to wait long at all.
