Rematch with Matt at Salem Church

After our fight on 30 September in which Sedgwick's (Matt) VI Corps crushed Rebel aspirations of keeping Sedgwick at bay and delivering a flanking blow to Lee at Chancellorsville (see Salem Church Game #2), Matt agreed to a rematch.  In the 07 October rematch, we would swap sides.  Matt would command the Confederate Army deployed in the woods around Salem Church astride the Orange Plan Road (OPR) and I would take command of Sedgwick's VI Corps.  Could I repeat Matt's earlier successful assault against Rebel positions?  Let's see.
Armies arrayed for battle astride the Orange Plank Road.
Although Matt led Bartlett's Brigade on the Federal Left in an all-consuming, all-out attack in the first game, I did not believe I could repeat such an impressive performance.  Instead, the Federal attack begins on the Federal Right as Browne's Brigade of Newton's Division moves up across Golin Run to near the Perry Farm.
Already, Rebel guns begin harassing Federal troops!
How does Matt respond?  He orders Wofford to bring his brigade up through the woods to challenge Bartlett!  Surprise!  Wofford presents an overwhelming force with which Bartlett must deal.
Williams' Farm threatened!
Yankees are driven out of the woods as Wofford advances.
Could the Federal Left be turned so easily?
Browne reaches Perry Farm.  Semmes' Brigade is encountered.
McLaws orders his divisional artillery forward
deploying on both sides of Orange Plank Road.
Mahone crosses Golin Run as
Semmes moves up to contest Perry Farm.
Rebel guns begin to take their toll.
Thinking a breakthrough against the Rebel Left is possible,
Sedgwick orders Wheaton forward to support Browne.
Seizing the initiative Wofford presses forward against Bartlett.
Barlett is driven back as Kershaw moves forward in support.
The Federal Left is wavering under the pressure.
With the Federal Left in trouble,
Sedgwick orders an all-out assault!
Wheaton urges his men to give everything in the attack.
Wheaton falls leading the assault.
His attack stalls when faced with Rebels lining the creek bank.
Browne's Brigade is wrecked in the fighting in the dense woods.
Against the Federal Left,
Kershaw brings his brigade into action at Williams' Farm.
An imposing sight as the Rebels come out of the woods!
As the Gray Wave breaks over Williams' Farm,
the tide sweeps Bartlett away.
Kershaw presses on but the 8SC is destroyed in the attack!
Kershaw falls back to gather more troops.
Kershaw's South Carolinians attack again.
Wofford presses on covering Kershaw's Right.
The Williams' Farm is cleared of the enemy.
Kershaw pushes forward!
Even the blacksmith's place along the OPR is under pressure!
The blacksmith is in Rebel hands!
Two Union batteries are lost!
Wofford's Brigade is wrecked in the fighting at the Mill's Farm.
Sedgwick's Left is crumbling fast!
With little threat from their front,
McLaws' artillery concentrates on Russell
as he attacks Semmes in the center.
In the Federal assaults from both Russell and Browne,
Semmes' Brigade is wrecked!
With each army suffering two wrecked brigades, the next to see a brigade break will withdraw from battle.  If Wilcox' Brigade of the Rebel Army loses one more regiment, it breaks.  If Russell's Brigade of the Federal Army loses one more regiment, it breaks.  Who will that be?
Rebel artillery quickly decides the issue.
Russell loses one more regiment and his brigade is wrecked!
With the third brigade wrecked, Sedgwick has seen enough!  Since the road to the crossing of the Rappahannock has not been cut, Sedgwick withdraws north across the river to safety.  While Matt was able to reverse history in the first contest, I could do no better than see the historical result this time.

Well done, Matt, on a Confederate victory!  Again, I fall to Matt's mighty sword.  The rematch was a much closer tussle than seen in the first match-up as the Butcher's Bill below illustrates.  What does it take to beat Matt on my home field?  I may never know...
Butcher's Bill
Matt, thank you again, for another excellent and challenging game.  Game duration was six turns and about three-and-a-half hours.

Great fun!

  1. Wupped again sez Sedgwick,
    Mighty close run sez he,
The Rebs had the Union licked,
    And chased him through Tennessee,

    Bluebellies aint got no luck,
    Ceptin the type that's bad,
    Ther generals all lame ducks,
    It makes 'em very sad,

    Lets try again my boys,
    The general said to them,
    Thrown in agin like toys,

Off he takes quickly at a run,,

    Fast running for the sea!

  2. Swapping sides for the rematch after the September 30 fight was a great idea, since it let Matt command the Confederates while you took Sedgwick's VI Corps into the same ground. The Federal Left really had a rough day, with Bartlett driven back, Wheaton falling in the assault, and Browne's Brigade wrecked in the dense woods. Once Rebel artillery wrecked a third brigade and Sedgwick had seen enough, the Confederate victory felt hard-earned rather than one-sided. For a lighter character-building game to enjoy between tabletop sessions, you can download Gacha Nebula APK. Thanks for another detailed battle report.

    1. Good use of AI. I will let this SPAMMER stand.

    2. I got one of these from the same 'person', but I'm not so accepting 😀
I wouldn't click on that link...

  3. That couldn't have been closer, down to one brigade to go. They are always the most exciting to be in. That is also quite an impressive AI spammer, although really only offering a summary. How long before they start their own blogs, I wonder?

    1. The outcome was very close, Lawrence. Brown's damaged regiment needed only one more hit to break. Wilcox' damaged regiment needed only two hits to break. It was really VERY close!

I wish AI could write my battle reports!

  4. 'I wish AI could write by battle reports!' I'm pretty sure it can and if not today .... then tomorrow!

Nice that you have played this a few times and can still be surprised (Wofford). 3½ hours play, a game conclusion and a close fought battle - perfect!

    1. I am sure given the right inputs, AI could write a good battle report. If I have to come up with the inputs, anyway, I might as well write it myself!

This was Game #4 in the series with a total of six battles played. These replays are showing what is possible in the scenario and that the scenario is actually quite balanced if played competently.

    2. The only way I could see AI AAR working is if you fed in the briefings for each side, told it which units in which photo corresponded to the units in the briefings and then recorded the outcome of each move fot it to process too. Much easier to write it yourself, AI isn't telepathic(yet).

    3. I agree that is easier to write the BatRep yourself. The downside is that, for me, writing the report is not easy.

  5. A very hard fought battle that one Jon, the butcher's bill is high on both sides, but congratulations to Matt on a hard earned victory. These have been a great series of battles, really enjoyable.

  6. Another very closely fought and bloody battle there Jon! So close but yet again so far from Victory against Matt. It does show how attritional this battle was historically.

As for AI AAR's, you could try 'magic notes' to capture the conversations and themes contained therein, as I've been in plenty of meetings now where they are widely used.

    1. Yes, close and bloody! Still, I had a chance for the outcome to flip my way. Never heard of “magic notes” but I have been out of corporate America for a long time.

    2. It was new to me a couple of years ago now, but in my parent carer role, lots of the meetings I go to, the local authority uses them, freeing them up to concentrate on what is being said.

    1. My luck has turned around in the AWI campaign too! For my games with Matt, we have remarked more than once that who ever hosts tends to lose. I guess we just want to be a good host.

  9. Nice close game, good of you to fall on your sword and give Matt the victory, ever the good host! I finally won a game last night, something like six games without winning, so youre not alone!

  10. Wow that was close and bloody. Well done to Matt but it could have gone either way.
My attitude towards AI is let it do the admin tasks but not the creative ones. But the definition of admin subtly changes from person to.

  12. Fantastic report Jonathan and a great battle. The value of the scenario is shown by each of the reports being equally interesting as different play throughs and players develop new ideas and strategies.

I found the AI spammer interesting. It seemed an odd comment as it simply rehashed your report but the subsequent link is a dead give away. I guess we will need to get used to these things. As they practice tricking us we will get practice detecting them and the dance will continue onwards 😁

    1. Thank you, Ben! I was afraid that the repeated battle reports might all end up looking and sounding the same. Very happy to see read that you can spot differences in play and tactics.

On the SPAMMER, I don't get many and those I do typically get deleted straightaway. This time, an AI-generated summary of the battle showed some creativity, so I let it stay.
