Mail Call!

Monday's Battle Among the Tombs with Richard is in the books.  A fun game, it was, but a story to tell another time.

First, though, a rare mail call.  This year, spending has been way down beside the arrival of a few books, an occasional Slingshot magazine, a few hex-and-counter wargames, and even fewer figures.  To shake things up, a trio of packages arrived on my doorstep this week.  Wargaming packages on the doorstep are always a welcome sight.  These were no exception.

What arrived?  Let's open the packages to see!

Tufts
Since 2014 (I know, I checked!), I have been regularly ordering grass tufts from Tajima1 Miniatures out of the UK.  My last order was in 2024 when I really backed up the truck and loaded up with many boxes of these excellent self-adhesive tufts.

Needing to resupply some of the colored tufts, I began a reorder.  Prices have certainly increased since 2024 but it was the sticker shock of postage to the US that kept me from pushing "Buy."  To add insult to injury, extra import duties would be charged on shipments to the US.  Even before the import duty was accounted for, postage was going to be over USD$30 for a small package!  At that point I closed the browser and went off in search of alternatives.

After only a little searching, I found several vendors on Amazon who offered something similar at a fraction of the price.  In fact, the eight boxes of tufts shown below, delivered, were about the same price as the shipping charge from Tajima1 alone.  While these are not self-adhesive, they are about the same size as my favored Tajima1 tufts.  We will see how this goes!
1/100 Tanks
Always on the lookout for plastic 15mm Zvezda models, a pack of five PzIVs showed up on ebay a couple of weeks ago.  Luckily, I was able to snag them for a reasonable price.
1812 The Retreat From Moscow
Finally, and the piece de resistance was a small package from England.  In this thin package was the first offering from Paul Brook in his just released Battle Chronicles series.
This small format, 60-page book arrived courtesy of Reject Lee and Ray who helped in putting this title together.  Really a nice-looking effort of a similar size to Bob Cordery's Portable Wargame series.  I must admit that the footprint of this book is preferred to the large wargaming guides that Helion has been publishing.  The Helion guides, while beautiful and comprehensive, seem a bit unwieldy to read and use.  1812 is very comfortable in hand.
A cursory flick through the book reveals a pleasing layout and easy to read text.  The text layout is accompanied by handsome game maps and photos of Ray and Lee's gorgeous 1812 Retreat from Moscow collection.

Quite a nice effort.  Well done, guys, and THANK YOU!  Now, why was my copy not autographed???

Next time, hopefully a battle report from Monday's Battle Among the Tombs.

  1. Great to get hobby-related deliveries, Jon 🙂👍🏼. Those Zvesda models are an excellent bit of wargames-friendly kit…minimal assembly, nice end product. What’s not to like?!
Tufts - I’d recommend a teeny dot of superglue, which I use, or PVA which others seem to favor.
    Have fun!

    1. Thanks, Martin! In my early trials of basing this morning, I used a dab of PVA on each tuft to secure it to a base. That seems to work.

  2. Excellent stuff Jon! For tufts, I have used Temu several times - $3 - $5 NZ for 50-70 (sometimes more!) tufts. I too have some hobby related packages on the way.....its like being a kid at Christmas, isn't it?!😉

    1. Thanks! It is a bit like Christmas in June. These tufts are made in China but I have yet to test the Temu waters.

  3. Yeh, why didn't we sign the book??? We're not called the Rejects for nothing Jon!!!
Hope you enjoy the book, its a lot of fun!
As for tufts, I'll second Keith's Temu idea, I've bought a fare few over the past year or so, and they're great value for money.

  7. Parcels are great aren't they! :-) Also nice to see Ray’s and Lee’s booklet penetrating world markets :-) . May I ask, are the tufts you ended up with a domestically produced item or still an import - attracting duty? I can understand the tariff being a mechanism to increase reliance on home produced, but I’m not sure that is happening, at least not yet.

On the boardgame side of things, I am finding when ordering direct from the US, the postage and associated customs charge is pretty much equalling (or more) the cost of the game. U.K. importers can drastically bring the shipping / customs cost down due to their bulk and more efficient buying.

It is a new thing in my lifetime for overseas postage to have started moving into the ‘prohibitive’ band - how did that happen and why all of a sudden I wonder?

    1. Yes, 1812 has penetrated world markets. This is a very generous gift from Ray and Lee. The tufts are made in China (as are many things).

I find the cost of shipping from the UK to US similar, Norm. That is, shipping is regularly as much as the product, itself. Certainly makes me pause before ordering from the UK.

    2. I can see this sort of thing being the driver for wargamers, especially at the start of their collecting, turning their attention to owning a 3D printer for figures and terrain.

    3. 3D printing and DIY may be the wave of the future.

  8. Wow your post appeared on my feed and it was saying 7 hours ago, it has been 1 day recently! Fine looking goods there Jonathan it's always nice to get stuff through the post isn't it? International shipping is just crazy now.

    1. Yeah, there still seems to be a long delay in my posts getting picked up by the blogger feed. Some bloggers’ posts show up almost immediately but not mine. At least this time the delay is measured in hours and not days. International shipping is, indeed, crazy.

  9. A nice mix of stuff there Jon and as always, great to have the odd package or two arriving on the doorstep:). The whole tariff thing is a right pain in the proverbial, whether importing/exporting to/from the US:(. Ditto for some issues with the EU. Luckily I only need to buy from the UK, so can avoid all of this hassle, famous last words!

    1. Getting something wargamey in the post still provides a little thrill. For shipping from UK to US, any duty paid is a minor annoyance compared to (and compounded by) the cost of shipping.

  10. There is nothing better than seeing a package on one's doorstep to give an instant rush. Most of mine nowadays are nappies and baby formula, but I do still enjoy the thud as it's tossed over our iron gate.

  11. A shame about what has been done to doing business beyond the borders (speaking from a person here in the U.S.). They may be putting a strain on commerce, but I am thankful that we maintain "pre tariff" connections with friends across the pond(s) via platforms like this.

    1. Ed (and Norm), it is comforting to know that there are still some places where people can disagree while remaining cordial, encouraging, and respectful.

  12. Always nice to receive wargaming specific parcels and you got some good stuff too. (I'm personally trying to hold back on making yet more purchases.... We'll see how long that lasts.)

Ray's book looks ace. have really enjoyed his blogging on all the projects that ended up being photographed for the contents.

  16. A decent haul, especially the Zvezda tanks. As for tufts I mainly use EBay these days

  18. Great purchases Jonathan. I have started to use Amazon for the occasional wargaming purchase as well. If you have the free shipping it makes a lot of sense.

Just got the last of the terrain for the 1812 campaign delivered. Now I just have to paint the figures, assemble and paint the terrain and then I can get a game in 😂 The rule book is very impressive, very nicely done and I am happy that I bought it.

    1. Yes, being a Prime member with free shipping is a bonus, for sure. I agree that the book is quite well done. Impressive especially for a first effort. I look forward to your 1812 campaigning, Ben.

  19. It is always very exciting when wargaming stuff arrives in the post, but such a shame Zvezda are getting hard to find now.

Your post reminded me that a bunch of hex and counter games arrived here from the US via eBay, I must open them up and do something with them. The shipping was slightly eye watering, but I've got used to it. It is a far cry from the days when I ordered some spare shoe laces from a shop in LA!

    1. I agree that Zvezda are harder find, more expensive, and rarely available in bulk purchases from eBay. There are still some online hobby shops in the US that carry the models but often are out of stock.

Do tell, which wargames are incoming?

  20. Jonathan, your haul looks good.
The tanks are always fun to find.
The 1812 book is a very interesting possibility. I am bracing for my next order of figures, seeing the prices rise so much since my last big order, knowing the freight is horrendous compared to before, and as you mentioned, a dollop of duty on top. I have a glue gun and a large bag of Kibri grass so a large expenditure on tufts is not a present problem. But overall a good haul!

  21. Good looking haul Jonathan, but stop teasing us about that game!!

  22. Hmmm, Blogger again:(!!! I put up a post over 30 hours ago and it's still not showing in Feeds etc. This happened with another recent post too. It does make me seriously wonder why bother Blogging, if they don't show up? Currently no sign of your AAR either Jon.

    1. Very frustrating, Steve! I am about to throw in the towel myself. My AAR is published at https://palousewargamingjournal.blogspot.com/2026/06/batrep-battle-among-tombs.html.

I published the BatRep yesterday with no pick up from the feed and then republished it this morning to see if that would kick it into gear. Do you not see the latest post with the AAR?
