Yet Another Highland Regiment

This week has been a busy one but not on the wargaming front.  With temperatures warming up, I made it out on the bike four days.  Bike and body are still functioning up to expectations after the long winter.  Even with little snow this past winter, recent rains and snowmelt have filled the Spokane River Gorge that splits the city.  Lots of water cascading over the falls.  One reader asked about the falls in a recent post.  I snapped the following photo on one of the rides this week.  As seen, the river is running high and parts of the river both above and below the falls are overflowing their banks.
If you look closely, pedestrians can be seen on the footbridges spanning the Upper Falls.  Spring cleaning and yardwork are also in full swing this week.  Much more work to accomplish before I can relax at the painting desk.
In the meantime, I did manage to push one more Highland regiment out from the painting desk.  Figures are again from Old Glory and the flag is from David of Not By appointment.
On the Great Wargaming Survey front, data exploratory is underway for the next piece of analysis.  Coming up is a look at opponent availability and a few of the attributes that may influence whether a gamer has enough or not enough adversaries to face across the gaming table.  Some of the attributes under consideration are population density, travel distance, and group size.  Hopefully, something of interest falls out from this effort.

  1. Another fine unit of clansmen, Jon. I can't get over how wild that river looks, passing through the centre of a city!
I am sure your analysis will throw up plenty of interesting talking points!

    1. Thanks, Keith! The Lower Falls has an even steeper drop in elevation. My analysis will likely "throw up" something!

  2. I always enjoy seeing your Highland units Jonathan. Terrific work as usual. I also know summer must be on the way for you as well when the river is running high like that and you are on the bike again to capture it.

    1. Glad you like them! I will need plenty more but will have to replenish the stockpile before any more such units are turned out. Summer is on the way, hopefully.

  3. A fine looking highland unit, and good to complete a unit when like is busy elsewhere.

    1. Thanks, Peter! No lawn games for me, yet. Unless, that is, mowing is a game.

  5. Another lovely Highland unit Jon, very nicely done. Cracking phot of the falls, such an iconic feature of your city.

    1. The falls are definitely a city icon as is the US Pavilion in the back right of the photo. The pavilion is a remnant from the World’s Fair.

  6. You are certainly on a high on the production of Highlanders, look suitably menacing. The Spokane in full floe never ceases to amaze.

    1. That “high” is now stopped as there are no more highlanders to paint! The lower falls are even more spectacular with spring run off cascading over them. Maybe next time that way, I will stop for a photo.

  7. Great looking figures Jonathan and a lovely photo of the falls. No canoeing down the river this spring? 😁

  8. Nice work Jonathan. Have you gone for a "clan tartan" look as oppose to random colours?
I'd read the whole clan tartan thing was a bit of a myth: however speaking to Scottish people they always say that there must have been regional patterns of the same sett.
Spring is clearly here with the river in spate and Jonathan on his bike!

    1. Thanks! Yes, I opted for a clan tartan look rather than a mix of tartans. For me, a clan look is easier to paint and provides some continuity to each unit. I know the reality may be suspect but this is the path I took. Spring is clearly here.

  10. Great looking figures. That is one spectacular view of the falls. Washington State has some of the best combinations of rivers and woods I have ever enjoyed.

  12. Thanks for the image of the falls. A great sight when the river is in full flow. Bet it sounds impressive too.

    1. When standing on the footbridge over the falls, hearing someone next to you is difficult.

  13. Lovely unit, really like the muted colours, but still plenty of contrasting variety in there. The subject of opponents sounds a difficult one to quantify and capture … I smiled when I thought of your zoom group, probably travelling the furthest without even moving :-)

    1. Thanks, Norm! Yeah, distance is a funny thing to measure when remote gaming enters the picture. The main topic to explore relates to perception of enough opponents and some of the attributes that may (or may not) contribute to that state.

  14. Lovely unit! 😎
We really like Scottish units, but it's difficult to make beautiful tartan and we've often hesitated to embark on this adventure! 👏👏👏
