Activities on the hobby front continue winding their way through the month of May in the seasonal downturn mentioned in an earlier post (see A Few Spanish and a Seasonal Funk). Contributing to this stall and recent lack of posts was my week away in California. Nine days between posts is likely the biggest gap in more than a dozen years. Returning sees even more work to catch up with on the home front. Hopefully, I will be back to normal operations soon. The forced hiatus presents one interesting fallout. Having not posted in more than one week, I find it challenging to actually restart the blogging routine. I considered holding off for even a few more days needing a little recovery time to collect my thoughts. Once jostled out of a routine and regular habit, I am a little surprised how easy it would be to either slow down or stop altogether.
Mustering out earlier in the month are the French Chasseurs de Fischer. This body of 15 light infantrymen are added into the French Army for the 18mm SYW collection. Figures are Old Glory. Still a number of units awaiting their turn at the photo booth. With luck, I will return to the painting desk soon and the next post with not be nine days away.
Until next time.
Very nice Jonathan! Welcome back to blogging!
ReplyDeleteNeil
Thank you, Neil!
DeleteExcellent unit Jonathan. I'm glad that you shaking back onto your routine. I was beginning to think that you had been too quiet... and that is a great loss.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Richard! I was thinking that I had been too quiet too!
Delete‘Once jostled out of a routine and regular habit, I am a little surprised how easy it would be to either slow down or stop altogether’ ……. Welcome to my world :-)
ReplyDeleteQuite right, Norm! I need to rebuild a new head of steam.
DeleteWell I hexed out a board today with 5 1/4” hexes, so old is new and new is old. Keep up the good work. π
DeleteI saw your latest work, Norm. In the most recent WotR game of Solden Hill, I went gridless. While the game played out fine, the players and I agreed that playing remotely on a hex was a better solution. Back to hexes after a very short diversion to an open table.
DeleteThese are nifty looking little chaps - like them a lot.
ReplyDeleteMy own normal level of blogging output represents a balance of all sorts of things, but I've come to accept that what I get out of posting is mostly personal entertainment, communication with friends and - less obviously - a useful habit of routine engagement. Sometimes, looking at my old posts, I wonder why on earth I published a particular item, and when coming back from a quiet spell I find I'm trying to be more discerning in my choice of material. It doesn't last, of course!
Anyway, that's enough about me - good to see you back in action.
Much appreciated, Tony!
DeleteI post for personal accomplishments and entertainment too, but my posts are less entertaining than yours!
I Had a year of one post, and one over 100 posts. Posting with excellent content is more impressive than a high post count. Your blog will make it better for you and you will make the blog better, post by post.
ReplyDeleteJoe, this may be the jolt I need!
DeleteVery nice unit Jon, I like their headgear in particular!
ReplyDeleteI can easily believe this us the longest gap between posts on your blog, like others, I had started to wonder where you were!
I also totally understand the impact of a break in routine..I was back home from our short holiday early Tuesday evening but could not motivate myself to post anything until Saturday...and I have still not visited the painting desk!
The mirliton is a fine piece of headgear. With an average of nine or ten posts per month, May is going to miss that mark by a bit. Probably will affect the annual totals too. Oh well, life proses constant adjustments to routines. With focus, perhaps I can return to that frequency? I have been back two days and have yet to make it downstairs to the game room.
DeleteA lovely unit Jon….a rest is often a good thing. This wargaming lark is a hobby after all π
ReplyDeleteThank you, Matt! A rest is good but coming back after a week away is slow.
DeleteA fine addition there Jonathan. I try to keep up regularly with posts as I think I might stop all together if I don’t. Though I feel it can be counterproductive if the mojo is absent and I force myself perhaps?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Phil! How many of us have these same thoughts on blogging, I wonder?
DeleteInteresting that the chords on the mirliton are green as well, which makes them look quite different. Lovely work on them. It is interesting when one has an enforced break away from the hobby. I always feel lick I need a bit of a kickstart to get back into the swing.
ReplyDeleteThank you! The mostly green uniform needs the white gaiters to give some punch to the effect. I have the same response. I need to kick myself back into gear.
DeleteBeautiful unit Jonathan!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteNice to see you back in action. I aim for two posts a month - which is not too much of a chore.
ReplyDeleteGood! Going from ten posts/month to none in nine days is quite a change. I need to pick up the pace again. Two posts/month is a leisurely and sustainable pace.
DeleteYou brought back some memories there Jonathan...I remember painting that unit for someone back in the mid-1980s using the old Frei Korps figures. And I agree it is very easy to drop out of the routine.
ReplyDeleteThe inertia to overcome even a week off from blogging produced a greater challenge than expected.
DeleteAlways difficult to get back into the routine of posting after being away with no wargaming/painting activity to really write about.
ReplyDeleteGetting back into the routine is hard even though I still have plenty to share.
DeleteOh, BTW, the unit is very well done and should coun as a week's worth of a pass on posting just to get it correct.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joe!
DeleteLovely figures Jonathan.
ReplyDeleteI try and post in advance with one or two months posts in the pipeline, so there is no real pressure to post anything... not that my one post every two weeks is particularly onerous.
Thanks! You are more proactive than I. When I was still traveling for work, I would try to get one or two posts in the can to publish while away. Now, I publish just in t8me with no backlog.
DeleteA lovely looking unit Jon, very nice and a unit you don't see too much off. Welcome back to blogging, I had thought you had been very quiet so it's good to see you back.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Donnie! While I only missed nine days, it seemed like a long time between posts.
DeleteWelcome back. Rather like exercising, once you disrupt the routine it's easy to let things slip. Then again, starting up with regular blogging/writing doesn't bring on the soreness and strains that getting back into shape does!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ed! It sure is easy to let a routine slip away with only the briefest of lapses. Why am I still sore?
DeleteA great looking unit, full of character and gaming potential for the table. I really look forward to seeing them in action…
ReplyDeleteAlan Tradgardland
Thanks, Alan! After I complete the current round of WotR games, I ought to return to the SYW/WAS for a time. Which battle to work up? That is the question.
DeleteLovely looking unit, very characterful, I was concerned as it seemed such a large gap in posting but all good now, I don't have a set amount of posts I aim for, just with what turns up!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks, Iain! I appreciate your concern. Nine days is a large gap in postings from my regular routine. We will see if I can return to a similar pace.
DeleteLovely work on these Jonathan.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Neil!
DeleteMeh, a week off doesn't seem like a big deal, but I guess if you're used to posting x3 a week then it might. I'm sure you'll get back into it again. Eventually.
ReplyDeleteor don't. Why not let off the gas petal and cruise for a whileπ. you've certainly earned it. π
Thanks for the advice, Stew! Cruising sounds like fun but not in my nature...
DeleteA very nice unit there Jon:). I agree it is all too easy to lose the routine of Blogging etc, once you have even the smallest of breaks. I think my last post was over a month ago, but am slightly back in the saddle with the Partizan show report.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Steve! I looked through your Partizan post while on the trainer this morning. Great games and great photos!
DeleteGood to see you return to form Jon. I know how easy it is to slip out of posting! Think I went over a month recently.
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly easy to not return to hammering out regular posts after only a brief hiatus. In fact, I’m not getting much of any hobby work done.
DeleteWelcome back Jon - if I could manage a post every 9 days I'd be quite pleased... The Chasseurs look fun, rather unusual!
ReplyDeleteWhen accustomed to posting every three days, a span of nine days between posts is a bit of a shocker.
DeleteThey are tops Jonathan. They *must* get a +1, even if they cannot spell the name correctly.
ReplyDeleteI had a chuckle. Posting every nine days would be record output for me! However often you post they are always worth checking out.
Best wishes, James
Thanks, James! One day, these fellas may get a +1 in your honor.
DeleteI love the French light infantry. They have such a nice touch with their colourfull uniforms and their special jobs on the battlefield. Normaly I have to work on the figures to get the special look of the light troops. As always you painted them very well.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
