Now for Something Different!

After a productive August at the painting desk, I hoped to carry that momentum into September.  Well, the month began with good progress and good intentions but quickly ground to a halt.  Too many other distractions to make it down to the painting desk for any meaningful painting sessions.  Cycling and other outdoor activities, scenario study and design, and gaming all contributed to snatching away much of my free painting time.
Vicenti Infantry Regiment
Despite these pulls on my time, I did manage to muster out two regiments of infantry for the 18mm SYW/WAS project.  Today's release features an army not often seen on the wargaming table, Genoese!  These two, 23-figure regiments represent the Vicenti and Biembo Infantry Regiments.  Foot figures are Old Glory lead by Eureka mounted colonels. Biembo Infantry Regiment
This week (Wednesday) saw the first game of refighting the Confederate attack on Sherman at Shiloh.  With a little luck, maybe a battle report can be hammered out in a few days.  The game was a long one but one featuring some surprise, jubilation, despair, and a lot of laughter.  All good fun.  A rematch is in negotiation.
Rebels advance!
On cycling, weather has been absolutely perfect with warm, sunny days and a slight breeze.  A real pleasure to be out on the bike in such conditions.  A handful of photos from recent outings follow.

I will be back on the bike later this morning once the thermometer climbs about 25F.

  1. Two very nice regiments Jon, the OG figures have a good sense of movement to them, nice uniforms. Some stunning scenery on show, lovely.

    1. Thanks, Donnie! Over here, we describe Old Glory figures as "animated." Glad you enjoyed the landscapes!

  3. Great work on those two new regiments Jon and always good to see something a bit different:). The Shiloh games looks good and await the AAR with interest. Love the shots of your recent bike rides, which would certainly spur me on to get out on two wheels. Sadly weather and real life have meant I've not been out for ages:(.

    1. Thanks so much, Steve! This Shiloh scenario offers challenges to both armies. Some BIG challenges. I weave cycling into Real Life. An activity that must be wedged into the schedule.

  4. While I can't imagine cycling distances to see it, the landscape looks lovely with that touch of autumn colour/fall color. That barn is classic Americana too.

    1. The barn is a classic. Perhaps hard to believe but that is the "good" barn on the property. The other barn right behind this one is falling apart and returning to the ground. Pleased that you enjoy the landscapes. I sure do.

  5. As an inveterate terrain builder I love that old barn; wonderful inspiration.

  7. Nice to see the painting is not being neglected; must be the first C18th Genoese I've seen.
Painting, gaming and cycling; I'm surprised you have time for eating and sleeping!

    1. Painting is not neglected but it seems to have taken a backburner after a solid September start. I have some hussars on the table that simply will not paint themselves. While sleeping is optional, I never miss a meal...

  11. Great units and a nice teaser on the Shiloh game. I'm very much looking forward to the AAR on that one Jonathan, when you have the time to fit it in with everything else you take on. I personally have had to cut out the cycling for the past fifty years or so to ensure I can squeeze everything else in.

    1. Thanks, Lawrence! The Shiloh game was quite interesting but long. We played for nearly five hours before the Rebels threw in the towel. Your observation on cutting out cycling for fifty years has me laughing.

The picture of the river is fantastic! Views like that are a good incentive to get you out on your bike I am sure.

  16. Two great additions to the collection, Jon. I don't think I've ever seen Genoese for the period before? They look great, as do David's flags.
Looking forward to our Shiloh, now we've fixed a date and love the photos. It all looks very serine.

  17. You weren’t kidding when you said different. Genoese are certainly different for mid-18th C, at least in the Anglophone world. Maybe Italian or Spanish wargamers have a different spread of armies.
And lovely scenery from your bike ride. I especially like the lakes!

    1. Genoese were present in a number of the Northern Italian WAS battles including Bassignana. Now, I will be able to field them when needed. The foliage is yet to turn color here but soon the trees and bushes will be aglow in bright colors.

    2. Might we also see some Neapolitans and Modenese appearing on a table in WA?

    3. Perhaps? I would need to paint some first.
