The Plataea Half-Dozen

In the lead photo above, Scott uses his highly refined psyops skills against a weaker opponent (me!) to instill indecision at which card to play next.
At Scott's invitation, I made the 40-minute drive to Coeur d'Alene for a midmorning start to a half-dozen games of Platea using Scott's beautifully painted Greek and Persian armies and Commands & Colors Ancients.
We managed to play six games in two, one-and-a-half hour sessions with a long break for lunch at a local Thai restaurant.  All six games were fast and furious.  Of course, throughout, much discussion centered upon the current state of the world and our reasoned assessments.
The Greeks won all six battles with Scott and I winning three games apiece.
With five banners needed to win, the games and scores broke down as,
  1. 5-3 to Scott
  2. 5-3 to Jon
  3. 5-3 to Jon
  4. 5-1 to Scott
  5. 5-2 to Jon
  6. 5-3 to Scott
In the overall banner count summed across all six games, Scott edged me by one point.  Very close!
Fun day out for me with good gaming, good food, and good company.

  1. About the first picture: too bad you couldn't read the reflection of Scott's cards on his own glasses, it would have been even better than psyops skills :)

  4. First picture is a beauty! That rings a faint bell - isn't there an old b&w photo of Jack Scruby staring down an opponent? - I guess it was a conscious tribute to JS?

    1. When I sent the photo to Scott, i told him it was a great picture. He agreed and promptly put it on FB.

Do you have that old Scruby photo? That would be fun to see.

  5. 6 games in one sitting is an impressive effort Jon! Nice for you to get out for a face to face game rather than hosting on line, I imagine!
Based on the results, it seems the Greeks were the winners, rather than their leaders?!!

    1. Very good to get out and enjoy a battery of F2F games for a change. Yes, the Greeks were the winners on this day. The CCA website shows a 65/35 split in wins for the Greeks. We both agreed that the Persian wins must be down to either incompetent or very lucky Persian play.

    2. I think it's in either Solo Wargames or Wargames Campaigns - the beast of Brooklyn or some such title.

  9. Sounds like a fun day out. As much as I like Thai food I think having it for lunch might distract me for the afternoon session.

  10. Nice miniatures. Those hexes look huge! 150mm or 6" as an estimate?

    2. Scott is clearly as talented at drawing a hex grid as he is at painting figures.

    3. He is talented although he is considering redoing the grid on his table.

Mind you with such pretty toys who wouldn’t want to keep playing.

  14. Excellent day out Jonathan. Definitely worth a 40 minute drive!
From the game stats it looks like Scott got you nice and relaxed after lunch and then pounced 😂

    1. The 5-1 loss in Game #5 hurt and was the decider in which player won the overall banner count.

  15. Scott looks to be a fearsome opponent. Six games in a day, you folk do nothing by halves! Lovely troops and looks like fun all around. Not much tops that.

  16. Plenty of plaudits instead of pathetic platitudes for this picturesque account (photos and words) of your recent Greeks vs Persians "holiday."

The long lunch break seemed a bit off topic, though. Thai food while taking an intermission from the Greek and Persian Wars? Surely, kababs, stew, gyros, or salads would have been more appropriate.

Thanks for posting. Are there plans for a future F2F "banquet"?

    1. Game Days are social events. Gyros would have been a good choice! A tasty meal is part of the ceremony giving us a chance to catch up, discuss the games thus far, and attempt to solve world problems.

  17. What a splendid sounding day Jonathan. Six games , good friend and a meal out.

  18. A day to aspire to: half a dozen games and a fine dinner, even if the price of admission was the risk of being mesmerized by holding Scott's gaze too long.
