Seems like SYW figures have not trooped across the painting desk in a while. That is about to change. Several battalions of Bavarian infantry are forming up in the painting queue patiently awaiting their turn with the brush.
Off the painting desk today is a 23-figure battalion of Bavarian infantry from the Morawitzky Regiment. These figures muster out as the second battalion of the regiment. The first battalion mustered out a long time ago. I think those figures were Freikorps 15's. Finally, its sister battalion is called up for service.
While the mounted officer is an Eureka Miniatures figure, the musketeers are from Lancashire Games' 18mm SYW Austrian range. This battalion is the first time Lancashire's SYW Austrians have seen the painting table. Lancashire SYW Russians have made their way across the painting desk but not Austrians. These are really great figures. Easy to paint with nicely raised details. I like the seemingly oversized tricornes too. Size-wise, the figures compare favorably to Eureka, Blue Moon, and Old Glory infantry. Expect more of these fine figures to come.

An attractive unit with that lovely shade of blue that is emphasised by the flag.
ReplyDeleteIn the photo, the cuffs look too deeply sculpted - is that just the camera or is that noticeable in the real unit ... I am still a little unconvinced by some of the newer Lancashire Games 18mm sculpts. In a couple of months, I should be seeing the trader and the figures in person, I was trying to decide on their ACW, but will wait until then.
Thank you, Norm. Yes, the cuffs are cut quite deeply and look more appropriate for WSS but I like them. These figures are from the older Lancashire ranges and not from the more recent 18mm additions including the FRW. The newer ranges and sculpts are a step back in quality to me. That these match up well with figures from my SYW project and are quite inexpensive is a BIG bonus.
DeleteLet me know your impressions of the figures when you see them in person. Compare the older figures (like the SYW range) against the newer 18mm sculpts (FRW and Napoleon in Egypt).

DeleteLovely work Jonathan. There is something genuinely appealing about the Bavarian army in those cornflower blue coats, or is it those checkered standards? Napoleonic Bavarians have always appealed, but one of the regulars in the group already has a large collection.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mark! The cornflower blue coat does it for me too. For the Napoleonic Bavarians, the addition of the Raupenhelm makes the Bavarian uniform without equal for infantry.
