Russian Combined Grenadiers in 1799

Of late, painting has taken a very distant back seat to a number of other time consumers including travel for leisure, travel for work, illness, and more gaming than usual.  While the increase in gaming and vacation travel were most welcome, the time spent embraced by a seasonal illness was not so much appreciated.  At least I either picked the bug up on my last day of vacation or on the long international flights back home.  Being sick is ok as long as one is not too sick to paint.  Unfortunately, I was too sick to paint.
Anyway, off the painting desk today is the first of likely three, thirteen-figure Russian Combined Grenadier Battalions for the 1799 project.  The Russians brought a number of these combined grenadier battalions on campaign to Switzerland and Northern Italy.  Since they featured in the campaigning, I needed to add a few more.

This battalion musters out as the Moscow/Yekaterinoslav Combined Grenadiers.  Figures are AB Miniatures.

Maybe April's painting production will see some improvements?

  1. What a fantastic ‘canary’ uniform. Hopefully you are back on full form after a raher nasty sounding bug.

    1. Thanks, Norm! The Russians call this lemon yellow color, "citron." With luck, i will be back to full strength soon.

  5. They really look cool Jonathan, there's so much colour on one stand of figures.

  6. You still paint more with sickness than most people do (I mean me) 😀

    Feel better soon!

  8. I am feeling you on the illness, I did the same thing after all my work travel. Too sick to paint sucks.

The figures look good. The canary pants really stand out, I almost didn't recognize them as Russian after the Zorndorf project.

    1. I think the Russian uniforms during this period took inspiration from SYW Prussians. They can be a colorful lot.

  9. Lovely unit Jonathan! I note some of the mitre cap plates are brass and others are a silver/steel colour. Does this represent different troop types within the battalion?

Wishing you a fast and full recovery.

    1. Thanks, Mike!

The grenadiers making up this combined grenadier battalion are drawn from two separate regiments. In this case, one regiment had grenadiers in brass mitre plates while the other had grenadiers in silver mitre plates.

  10. These are great, Jon. I do love some Miter caps, and with the combined units you get to do two different patterns per unit.

Sorry to hear of the illness, and hope your recovery picks up!

    1. Thanks, Peter! The "combinedness" does add some variety to a unit.

Recovery has been slow but I am getting back to old form.

  11. Very nicely done Jonathan. There is nothing worse than feeling too sick to paint. I find that if I'm anything less than 90% then I just don't have the motivation, and suppose it must be to do with the concentration required.

    1. Glad you like them, Lawrence!

I agree with respect to motivation when not feeling well. There were many days when I lacked the motivation to even go downstairs to the game room.

  14. Really great infantrymen, Jonathan.
I’m a bit concerned about mounted officer uniform. It seems a bit too modern for 1799. Though the beautiful brushwork completely overcomes all issues :)

    1. Thank you! Perhaps the mounted officers uniform is a bit too modern but that is what I had to work with. Besides, how out of fashion is a greatcoat?

    2. Did you make a greatcoat? I thought it was a frock-coat

    3. I think you are correct. It is a long frockcoat on the AB Russian mounted officer.
