Assyrian Mounted Archers #5

What?  Another stand of Assyrian mounted archers shows up on display?  Yes, indeed!
Trotting off the painting desk is the fifth stand of mounted archers to depart its mustering station.  Figures are, again, from Wargames Foundry and I have yet to tire of painting these fine horsemen.  Good thing I have not grown tired of them.  I must have another dozen in The Lead Pile!  Detailing is superb on both horse and rider and a real pleasure to tackle.
With the bringing out on display of these fine fellows, only one unit remains to complete the current tranche of Assyrians.  After that, time to set up a group photo of the Army in its current state.  While painting effort is transitioning to other projects, Assyrians will remain in the mix.  I may change my mind and plunge headlong back into painting Assyrians with a fury as this past summer has witnessed.  Other hobby activities are drawing my interest, though, including many upcoming games.

  1. That's a nicely colourful unit, Jonathan. Even more impressive is that none of the painted figures cause a displeasing clash between opposing colours, and they all seem to fit together in a nice harmony of colour. Top use of complementing colours in the positioning of different figures!

    1. Roy, it is very good that none of the color choices cause a displeasing clash!

    1. Thank you, Iain! Laid out, it is surprising how much has been painted over the summer months.

  6. Just a thought I've had while thinking back on the Osprey book 'Ancient Assyria' (Men-at-Arms, I think) and I can remember there being Eunuchs shown in the paintings with the Generals, or the like. Is there such a thing as a 25/28mm Assyrian Eunuch figure? There is for the Egyptians, I know. (You could tell the Eunuchs in the pictures due to lack of facial hair and differing clothing.)

    1. Good question, Roy. I know of no specific figure but I bet there are figure ranges out there where a Eunuch-like figure could be pressed into service.

  11. A veritable tidal wave of Assyrian cavalry awaits. Nicely done.

    1. It does seem like a lot of cavalry but at only four figures per stand, a lot of stands does not necessarily mean a lot of figures.

I saw a description of Kushite light chariots referred to as cavalry. What do you think about that?

    2. Agreed, however your 4 feet of chariots have a certain gravitas all their own. I am currently wrapping up Chariot #5 for my collection, so I am still leaning towards finding some good light cavalry figures. I think the Old Glory ones might just do the trick.

    3. The Old Glory cavalry might be just the ticket! Their website photos are hard to discern, though. Does anyone have worse photos of their figures?

  12. Great to see these painted up so well, Jonathan. I recall seeing packs of Foundry Assyrians at the local game store - I was so tempted to get them, but never got them. Alas, the owner later sold off all of his Foundry packs to someone at a bargain.

  13. More wonderful stuff.
BTW,. Eureka makes some really interesting Assyrian "command" type figures, including a couple of Priests, King/Prince/General figures, and one holding a severed eneny head!

I will give Eureka a look. I did not know they made Assyrians.
