Coldstream Guard in 28mm

Off the workbench this evening is destined to be one of my favorite British regiments, the Coldstream Guard.  What makes this regiment special is that these are the first of the Front Rank Reinforcement Sets British I have tackled.  Each set comes with 36 figures including command.  Unpainted they looked brilliant when I first opened the package.  The new figures are less rotund and chunky than earlier figures we have grown to love and expect from Front Rank.

These Brits take the paint very easily and turn out quite nicely.  Just look at the fine detailing in the face, shako, webbing, and wings.

Brilliant!  Fielding 18-figure British regiments, you might think that a 36 figure Reinforcement Set would allow for the completion of two regiments.  Well, that was not to be.  A follow-on order for the smaller, 6-figure Reinforcement Packs needed to fill out the ranks for a second regiment is in the works.  Also needed are a few odds and ends that I found lacking as I dug my through The Lead Pile on my 28mm Napoleonic binge.

Really outstanding sculpting on these British.  Ordered at the same time was a Reinforcement Set of French in bicorne.  The French are equally outstanding but not yet in the painting queue.

    1. Thanks, Cyrus!

The marching pose is most useful when wanting to base in closed ranks without having figures bump into one another.

  3. Great looking Guards, Jonathan. They do look a bit trimmer than previous sculpts.

    1. These new figures have been on a more restrictive diet than their earlier brethren, for sure!

      Great figures!

  4. Very sharp(e) looking Guardsmen, Jon. And in white pants... of course! :-)

I'm still waiting to add the (crimson) King's Color too my own Coldstreamers. In one of the many odd quirks of the British Army, in the Guards it is the Union flag design that is the regimental, and the colored flag that is the King's Color, exactly the reverse pf everyone else!

    1. Of course white pants! I considered having a few in browns or greys but decided on white trousers for the lot.

Interesting tidbit regarding the regiment's colors. Thanks for that!

  6. Wonderful unit with tons of nice details - and they do look less chunky than many other FR miniatures. Perhaps they've used a different sculptor for this range, or might it simply be the result of adapting to times changing?
