Maintaining the Reconquista theme having seen two cavalry units and a Granada travel pictorial in succession, off the painting desk today is a twelve figure heavy infantry Impetvs stand. This stand of heavy ( FP in Impetvs parlance) infantry is the second Black Guard fielded. The earlier stand was from Gripping Beast (see Gripping Beast Black Guard). This stand is from Artizan. Both Gripping Beast and Artizan offer an outstanding range for the Reconquista. The latest trio of Reconquista units have been added into the 28mm Renconquista Gallery on the tab above.
The painting desk is loaded with other 28mm figures in various stages of completion including SAW Americans and French chasseurs a cheval. After a chance meeting with Kevin Thursday during a shopping trip, we decided that I would host a game on Sunday. Although he suggested a follow-up FIW game to our earlier battle (see Battle of Carillon) would be fun, he wanted to be surprised on Sunday. So, no more details until Sunday!
These Artizan and Gripping Beast Black Guard infantry fit very well together. I should have made a comparison figure against figure before I painted both units. Maybe next time?
Great looking unit, loads of character and animation in the ranks! I really like the Arabic heraldry, adds a lot of drama - is the flag also GB? Hope you guys will have an enjoyable game today, perhaps we'll see an AAR here on the blog later then!
Also Miniature Building Authority, and for less expensive and much lighter paper terrain, , Wargames Vault and Paper terrain. WQe really have an ambarrasment of riches today!
I'm looking to possibly mix Artizan with Perry first crusade for El Cid games.
Can you tell me, or post a pic, how the artisan moors range and Perry go side by side please? Also, how about the cavalry ...Perry Crusader cav and Bedouin types vs Artizan.
HW, thanks for dropping in! If you look through the Reconquista Gallery, most of my painted units are Black Tree Design with only a few Artizan, Gripping Beast, or Perry. I don't have any Perry foot but I do have cavalry from both Artizan and Perry. I will take a look at those and make a comparison.
Excellent, they do look the part, Jonathan! V2 of your Black Guard are an interesting change-up from V1. I do like both versions.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Monty. I like them both too!
DeleteNice work as always, Jonathan. Great to see the two different makes fielded. Looking forward to your other works, and also the game. Best, Dean

DeleteVery nice mate. I'm finding this period more and more interesting which could be a bad thing :-)
ReplyDeleteIt is an interesting period and the figures can be used for multiple duties. Interest in a new period is not a bad thing, is it?
DeleteCheers!
That is a swell looking unit.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment and for stopping by!
Deletenow these guys really look super cool and mean! love them!
ReplyDeleteexcellent Jonathan..
Thanks, Phil!
DeleteVery nice work, Jonathan - and with the advent of the SAGA Crusades spin-off, these chappies are looking more and more collectible by the minute!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Evan. For SAGA, though, these guys would need to be based singly, wouldn't they?
DeleteExcellent work, love the overall impression, especially the mix of blue, black and grey colors...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Phil! I agree, the black and blue combination is a good one.

ReplyDeleteThank Soren! The flag is homemade from an image I picked up off of the internet.
DeleteA day spent with friends gaming is always enjoyable, right?
A great looking unit, with a very sinister appearance! Do you have moorish style fortifications?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Peter!
DeleteNo Moorish fortifications yet. Do you have recommendations?
Sally Forth would be one company to keep an eye on:
