28mm Reconquista Camelry

When I saw the Arab camelry on the Black Tree Design website, my first thought was that those camel cavalry would make an interesting unit.  My second thought was whether or not camels made it into service on the Iberian Peninsula during the Reconquista.  Looking at the Army lists in Impetvs, most of the Muslim listings include camel troops. Therefore, camel cavalry must have been present, right?    Great news for me since they look so dang cool!  As a reward for fielding camelry, camels negate the Impetvs Bonus against other cavalry.  That will be useful against the hordes of Christian mounted heavy cavalry that the Moors are apt to face.

While the riders are the same models as other cavalry troopers and serviceable, the camel models are really exquisite.  Nice detailing that surfaces with an application of the dip.

  1. Nice looking troops. I wonder how many camel borne troops really were in Spain. I think WAB lists had them there too.

    1. Thanks, Chris! I picked up the WAB El Cid supplement last week on a lark and you are correct. Camel troops are in the Almoravid and Almohad lists.

  3. Great painting on great figures! This is now my favorite unit in the Reconquista. I hope they get a place of honor on the battlefield.

    1. The castings are really quite nice and will be a very interesting addition to the army. They will be a good counter to enemy cavalry.

  4. These turned out great. Is it just me or do the camels look like they have smug little grins on their faces?

    2. I just have this horrifying premonition of their sweeping aside my cavalry with that smug self satisfied expression rubbing in the salt...

  6. Great painting and lovely castings. Gotta love some camels on the table, not to mention their "dreaded smell factor!"

    1. Thanks, Peter! Perhaps, the smell factor is what causes other cavalry to lose their Impetvs Bonus when attacking these beasts?

    1. Thanks!

When not away for work, I often find an hour on many evenings to paint. Some days, I don't make it down to the painting desk.

Having a number of different projects or collections active, make the work always interesting. If I get bored, I switch to something else.
