Sedgwick REJECTed at Salem Church

In a reminder to just how far I have fallen behind in duties to write and post battle reports, the calendar shows that the following game was played on 14 September with five of Postie's Rejects.  Gaming in September has picked up after a more relaxed summer and I am behind the curve already.
Armies arrayed for battle.
Anyway, the game on the 14th featured five Rejects taking their seats at the remote table to refight the 1863 Battle of Salem Church.  Lee (three brigades of McLaws' Division of Kershaw, Semmes, and Wofford) and Dan (McLaw, himself, Wilcox and Mahone's Brigades) would command elements of the Rebel Army while Richard (Sedgwick, Russell and Wheaton's Brigades), Steve (Newton's Division of Shaler and Browne), and Ray (Brooks' Division of Brown and Bartlett's Brigades) would take the helm of Sedgwick's Federal XI Corps.  After two weeks and three more Salem Church battles in the books since then, let's see how much of this battle I recall.
The Rebels await the attack they know is coming.
With the Rebel Army lined up in a mostly north-to-south line passing through Salem Church on the Orange Plank Road, the Federals waste no time in bringing the fight to the enemy.
Rebel army is poised to respond to the attacks.
Brown launches a frontal assault against the Rebels
hunkered down in the dense woods.
One of Wilcox's regiments is driven out of the woods
 and Rebel guns are overrun.
Payback is a B*** and Brown is stopped by canister.
The attack at Salem Church stalls.
Russell leads an attack against the enemy in from of Perry Farm.
The Rebels are thrown back into the farmstead but before
that attack can be carried out...
Bartlett attacks Wofford on the Federal Left.
Despite some success,
Kershaw's large Brigade is stirred into action.
Kershaw advances from his defensive positions
to put Bartlett under pressure.
Bartlett looks vastly outnumbered!
In fact, he is!
His brigade is thrown back with heavy casualties.
Bartlett is spent.
Seeing another stalled attack, Sedwick looks elsewhere.
Federals are reinforcing success north of the Orange Plank Road.
Russell and Browne coordinate attacks
against the Rebel held Perry Farm.
Attacks on the right grind down gaining little ground.
With Bartlett wrecked and attacks against Salem Church and Perry Farm going nowhere, Sedgwick orders his Corps to disengage and head north to cross the Rappahannock before that escape route is severed.  This fight is over, but Sedgwick lives to fight another day as he moves to join Hooker.
Butcher's Bill
The Butcher's Bill shows a relatively low number of destroyed regiments in both armies, but first impressions are deceiving.  Brook's Division has suffered the brunt of the heavy fighting.  Bartlett's Brigade is wrecked and Browne's Brigade is teetering on being wrecked, itself.  For the Confederates, Wofford's Brigade is wrecked from the tussle with Bartlett, but the Federal Left has collapsed.

Congratulations to Dan and Lee for fighting back the Federal hordes!  Still, with the relatively light casualties across both armies, I reckon that the fighting could have continued.  Sedgwick (Richard) assessed that continued fighting here against Reels in the woods would only precipitate wrecking his entire Corps.  Given that he still had an escape route available before that door was slammed shut, Sedgwick opted to disengage and move north across the Rappahannock.

This battle only saw two game turns played.  That was a lot of fighting and decision making contained in only two turns.

Thank you, Gentlemen for an engaging session!  The Rebels are 1-0, thus far, at Salem Church.  Is this a fight the Federals can win?  Stay tuned...

  1. Wow - 2 turns! is that due to a lot of fire power in a small space? the low casualties might present a ready made follow up 'what if' scenario.

    1. Norm, a lot of action can occur in two turns. I would not put this short action down to either small space (table was about 6' x 7') or a lot of firepower. Although the Federal left was essentially spent, CSA Wofford's Brigade was wrecked as well. Fighting could have continued with renewed attacks against the Rebel Center. The heavy weight of the Federal Right might have broken through to the north, but the terrain was a serious obstacle with which to deal. Richard is a pragmatic CiC. In the context of the scenario and history decided that discretion was the better part of valor.

    2. I note your comment below re the game with Matt shows the game going for more turns, so the diversity within the scenario is clearly there. It all sounds like everyone had a great time.

    3. Yes, Matt’s game was much longer in number of turns played. Time wise, both games were completed in under three hours.

  2. "On they came the same old way, as the general liked to say,
And we whipped their sorry ass, by the end of that same day,
While Salem church is ours again, there was a price to pay,
Many a southern boy won't see the dawn before we sent 'em on their way...."

unpublished song of Salem Church by an unknown Confederate soldier.

  3. A busy time at the Palouse Wargaming Journal and an impressive number of troops on the tabletop for the engagement art Salem Church.

    1. Last week was a busy one at the table, for sure. The scenario might be a bit large for a casual game.

  4. A very action-packed couple of turns, and well-remembered Jonathan. Interesting that this was the same number of turns as your trial run with Andy, and shows how potentially close to a conclusion that one may have been as well.

    1. This two-turn game saw a lot of action, no doubt about that! the Rejects kept me hopping. You are right! Andy and I played through two turns as well. I still figured there was play left in the game in both contests. The next game with Matt saw a lot more turns.

  5. A great report Jonathan and a very nice looking table. Looks like a tough one for the Federals as despite their numerical superiority they are attacking on a narrow frontage.

    1. Thank you, Ben! Like the historical scenario, this is a tough one for Sedgwick as it should be.

    1. Yes, while only two turns in length, the action was non-stop right from the opening cannonade.

  7. Cracking report, Jonathan! It’s amazing how much drama, friction, and tactical decision-making packed into just two turns of play.

The 10mm collections look magnificent on the grid. My webcam is due to arrive today, so I’m proper looking forward to getting set up and jumping back into the remote gaming action with you soon!

    All the best, Andy

    1. Thanks, Andy! There was a lot of action packed into only two turns. When you are able to view these proceedings on a screen larger than a phone, games will look even better. Good to see you made it into the Top 10. Excellent!

  8. Brief and bloody! The table looks just amazing crammed with so many units and figures, I'm surprised the players can keep track of what is going on. The largest horse and musket era remote games I've run are roughly on 9x9 grid with 10 units a side and even that is a struggle. Hats off.

    1. Thanks, Martin! Once I point out each command, players do a great job tracking their own units. Many of the Rejects use the rosters provided to help sort out the confusion and track losses. Of course, I remind players what is what whenever asked. Each army fielded more than 30 units.

  10. A good battle for an ACW game Jon, that would take me about 4 hours. Nice table.

  11. Excellent battle Jon and your ACW armies are a joy, this battle does seem heavily weighted towards the defenders Sedgwick would need a lot of luck to break through ?

    1. Thanks, Matt! As for breaking through, you know how to do it!

  12. Excellent write up Jon. I can't belive that was two weeks ago! To be Honest, Dan and I were chatting behind the scenes and were saying to each other "I don't think we can win this", but clearly we had inflicted enough damage on the Federals to make them think twice about pressing the attack. I think their deployment, and the luck of the dice, hindered their ability to get much of their force in the right position. If they had pressed the attack I'm sure they would have won the objective, but at what cost?

    1. Much appreciated, Lee! From my perspective, Sedgwick still had some fight in him but could he have broken through before he had seen three of his own brigades wrecked? Richard thought not but we will never know!

  14. A spectacular looking game, looking at the amount of troops in table you could easily double the turn count in time? You have great stamina managing it all.

    1. Thanks! Doubling the turn count is what transpired in the follow up game with Matt.

  15. A fantastic looking game Jon and a slightly unexpected victory for the Rebs, too! Our next "big" Sunday game at Barrys place will be ACW, so hopefully its as good as this one (although I hope we get more than two turns played!)

  16. A very annoying defeat, we just couldn't seem to get Steve and Richard's troops up in time, and once my troops had lost the left, it was over. We could have fought on but I think the result wouldn't have changed.
    Great game Jon!

    1. Sorry about delivering a very annoying defeat, Ray! The ground to the north of OPR is very dense and difficult terrain in which to maneuver. With overwhelming force on that front, the Federals just might have broken through. The question then becomes, can the Federals accomplish this task before their Left is completely rolled up? Richard thought not! Glad you enjoyed the game!
