A Pair of Muslim Command Stands

Basic Impetvs (BI) does not require separate command stands since leaders are integrated into a unit.  Not the case for me.  For my version of BI on a grid, I field at least one command stand per army and often one command stand per wing.  My Reconquista games generally do not use more than two command stands per army since many of these games are set for four players.  I can field four command stands.
Well, the remote game on deck later today has five players. That meant I needed to hurriedly push some command figures into the painting queue to field five commands by Monday.  As illustrated by these photos, two command stands made it out from the painting desk on Sunday just in time to field for Monday's game.
Figures are a mix of Black Tree Design, Gripping Beast (thank you, eagle-eye Ray), and Artizan.  One of these stands will take its place in the game today.
I have not had BI out on the table since a few Great Italian Wars battles back in January and have not hosted a remote game since the end of September.  Hope some of this comes back quickly!

  1. I spy a few Gripping Beast figures there Jon. The stands look great, looking forward to tonight's bash!

  2. They look REALLY good Jon. Funnily enough I was watching a Spanish film the other evening and some characters on it were watching El Cid.

  3. They look fantastic Jonathan. Especially the one reading the rule book.
An example of the need to have a comprehensive collection of unpainted figures (aka. lead mountain) to use in emergencies.

  4. Great looking command stands, Jonathan. My dice are being warmed up for tonight... not that it usually makes any difference!

  6. Very neat. Do commanders suffer the new command stand version of new unit syndrome I wonder 🤔

  7. Very quick work but up to your normal high standards Jon!

  8. Big fan of Advanced Impetus because of the command control and the diorama basing, I have separate commands for it also. Nothing beats the ability to do small dios on the table that have a use.

    Cheers

    1. Matt, I always stick with Basic Impetvs with a few twists. Easy to adjudicate in large, remote games. I like the basing possibilities too!

  9. Very nice Jonathan. BTW what does the banner with Arabic writing say? I hope it's not "shop at Ali's, great discounts" ☺

  10. Command stands look great Jonathan, nothing like a game to get you painting up additional figures

    1. Thanks! Necessity is the mother of (painting) motivation.

  11. Splendid Command bases, do put them on the table----even if the rules don't require them. Funny how things add to the game visually and increase the overall impact for immersion. If we added olfactory clues, probably less enjoyment for let's say camel or horse units.

    1. Thanks, Joe! Camels do not smell so good, and this game has two units of them!

    2. My approach exactly. I like to put command figures on, whether they have a game mechanic function or not, particularly for multi player games.

    3. Yes, even though BI has commanders integrated into one unit, having a tabletop commander helps focus player attention especially in multiplayer games.

  16. Command stands add to the look, I always expect lots from my commanders to repay the extra effort, but it is not always the case.

    1. Great looking commanders do not guarantee good performance. Well, I would never know!

  17. Lovely work there Jon and the flags really set the figures off, with the blue and white pattern a particular favourite of mine:).

  18. ah, the old strategy of putting on a game juuust bigger than what the current collection can do in order to provide motivation for painting the needed units. A trick that I know well. Nice job with the command stands. 😁

    1. Yes. A trick I wager many of us pull from the hat to occasionally to fool ourselves.
