Henry Ireton's Regiment of Horse

With the recent addition of a regiment of foote (see Aldrich's Regiment of Foote) for the ECW project, motivation remained high to push on to another unit.  Since a number of Empress Miniatures cavalry have lingered in The Lead Pile for awhile (only two and a half years by my count!), these horsemen seemed a reasonable target.
These nine horsemen muster out as Henry Ireton's Horse in buffcoats and lobster pot helmets.  The sculpting on both man and horse is superb.  The horses actually look like horses to me.  Perhaps the best horses I have seen in 28mm. The troopers are very good as well although detailing is not as raised and as easy to paint as in other figures.  Still, the results are terrific.  If I need to expand the cavalry arm of this project, Empress Miniatures is certainly high on the list.
Enough infantry figures remain in The Lead Pile to muster out two more regiments.  I will set a goal of getting at least one of those regiments into the painting queue in 2019.

  1. Very nice indeed Jonathan. Empress are certainly very nice figures but seem quite pricey to me

    1. Thanks, Iain! The ECW project has always mustered nine figure cavalry regiments.

  4. Those horse heads have been beautifully sculpted. The painted tones on the horses are very sympathetically natural, particularly the black, which I thinkis hard to get right (like whites!).

  5. Great work Jonathan. I have a few Empress cavalry units in my pile awaiting some attention, having recently glued together some foot regiments in preparation. It was the Empress figures that persuaded me to start assembling 28mm ECW armies.

    1. Thank you, Lawrence! The ECW range is beautiful although I only have seen the cavalry in person.

  6. I think they are stunning - super job. I was going to say "beautiful", but I don't think Ireton would approve!

    1. Much appreciated, Tony! To have you grace the comments more regularly, I guess I need to field more ECW troops.

  8. Nicley done, indeed--rendering buff coated horse as something other than lumps of brown can be tricky. Empress figs had not been on my radar screen before.

  10. Well done. A lovely looking unit. I agree that Empress are amongst the best sculpted figures, sadly a bit out of my price range, still really well done.

    1. Thank you, Robbie! Price wise, I find Empress figures in line with other manufacturers when bought regimental packs. I may need to corroborate my impression by checking on prices.

  12. Superb looking unit Jonathan, when I see figures like this it makes me realise what I'm missing when I game in 6mm. You must have the patience of a saint to paint them though. How long does it take you per figure?

    1. Your kind comments much appreciated! Since my painting sessions timewise are small and frequent, I have not timed the completion of a single figure. I would guess about one hour per cavalry figure.

  13. Beautiful work! I like a “laconic” style in paint. Colors are great.

    1. Thanks, Stew! I bet you are right. Painted figures almost certainly are happier than unpainted lead.

  15. A most handsome unit of Horse, Jon. I hadn’t been aware of Empress miniatures. I have several units of ECW Horse on the painting table myself.
