Austrian Light Infantry in 1798

Work continues on the 1799 project with the mustering of one battalion of the 2nd Carl Rohan Light Infantry Battalion.  The light pike grey uniform with white webbing is a welcome change from fielding battalion after battalion of the White Menace.  The white over grey provides a good contrast too. Three battalions of the white-coated, Austrian line infantry are working their way across the painting desk.  So, the 2nd Carl Rohan offers but a small respite.
For a change of pace, the 15mm foot figures are from Battle Honors rather than the more usually seen AB Miniatures' figures.  While the Battle Honors figures were sculpted by Tony Barton, they are somewhat slighter in stature than his later AB Austrians.  Very fine figures nonetheless. As always, the mounted colonel is an AB.  The Austrian line infantry, mentioned as in work, are Battle Honors figures as well.  Purchased from 19th Century Miniatures at a hefty discount, I doubled down and ordered two more bags of these figures at 30% discount.  I real bargain!

Also working across the painting desk are more 18mm SYW Prussian heavy cavalry and 18mm SYW Prussian fusiliers.

  1. Jonathan- I certainly admire the quality results you are achieving with your 15/18mm Miniatures. Well done indeed. My figures for my 1846 Project are not to a very high standard - I 'Block' paint -without using paint/ink washes and am happy with the results. Keep up the great effort. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Thank you! I took a look at your 1846 project and am very pleased to see you using Eureka figures. I have painted several handfuls of casualties for a friend as markers. Very fine figures.

    2. Thanks Jonathan - and welcome aboard my 'Tinkerton' Site. Yes, the Eureka 18mm by Mike Broadbent are excellent. Very pleased with my 'GOTHA-HOLLEN War of 1846' Project - please stay tuned for further developments. Cheers. KEV.

  2. A really interesting balance of colour that is pleasing to te eye, with that flash of green adding something that is greater than its presence would imply.

  4. A lovely unit, colourful compared to the line but still restrained and not garish, delightfully finished!

  5. Great looking Austrians in white, Jonathan. So, it seems you mix 15's & 18's together?

    1. Thank you, Dean. Some manufacturers call their 15s as 15s; some call their 15 as 18s, some call their 18s as 18s. In this case the Battle Honors Austrians are about the same height as the ABs but BHs are more slender. I think they work together on the same table with ease.

    1. Thanks! The white over light grey is a pleasing contrast. Too bad the Austrians did not field many of these units and that the concept of light infantry in this style was abandoned early on.
