Renwal's Nieuport 17 in 1/72

Another old kit finds its way to the workbench.  Since the Germans hold the edge in aircraft in the collect, another Allied aircaft slipped into the production line.
The 1966 Renwal Nieuport 17 kit comes with "aero-skin" appliques to be applied as decals over the entire model rather than painting the aircraft.  Being unfamiliar with using this "aero-skin" technique I opted for building the kit in a traditional fashion.  Since a second Renwal Nieuport 17 lurks in inventory, I will attempt applying "aero-skin" on the second model.
This Renwal N17 is a good kit and easy to assemble.  Painted in a scheme found on the internet, this will make a fine addition to Allied airpower.

  2. A timely post for me, Jonathan. I've been looking and wondering about my own WW1 aeroplanes these last few days. Not having looked at the Allied aircraft yet, you're my only source of influence at this time.

Top stuff and I look forward to seeing the rest.

    1. Roy, there are plenty of sources on the web showing historical paint schemes as well as finished models. These can provide great inspiration too!

Appreciate your interest in the WWI planes!

    2. Jonathan, look what you've gone and made me do! You've only got me looking into buying a Nieuport 17 and painting it as a kite from No. 6 Sqdn, RNAS

    3. Obviously I mean a model Nieuport. I don't think a full-sized reproduction would fit in our front room :)

    1. I am equally intrigued by the idea of aero-skin. Giving it a try on the next Renwal tackled.

      Thanks, Scott!

  5. Great looking plane! The distinctive French markings really make it sing. One does not read too much about French World War 1 Aces and/or their planes, compared to British, German, and American ones.

  9. Another cool addition. Is the decal set a traditional water slide or is it meant to be 'doped' onto the surface truly old school style?

    1. Thanks, Jake. The decals are from another kit and are of the traditional water slide type. With the aero-skin, the emblems are part of the "skin."
