Assyrian Wars - Babylonians

Babylonian or Chaldean heavy infantry is the last of the units to see completion before the long promised Assyrian Army Pass-in-Review.  The light blue shields look good to me.
This fourteen figure stand of infantry are from Newline Designs and represent the second such unit fielded.  I like this figure and pose very much.  Another unit or two of these fine figures may work their way into the painting queue eventually.  Of course, I would need receive a figure resupply.
One advantage to fielding the Babylonians or Chaldeans is that they can see service either with or against the Mighty Assyrians.  They will begin duty among the ranks of the Assyrian powerhouse.

Laying the army out on the gaming table, I was surprised at how large this army had grown over the summer.  Next time, the army will be put on parade.

    1. Iain, I really like the Newline figures. Quite a different sculpting style than Foundry terrific nonetheless. I like Newline more and more with each passing unit. They fit well with Foundry too so that is a big bonus.

  4. Ye. Good choice for the shield colour. Can't think where I've seen it before.

  5. Another very nice base, the tone / shade of blue is just right, with an impression of some wear / age to the shield. It would be very easy to make these too vivid. I think ancient armies greatly benefit from some colour identifiers in the army to make force management a bit easier during play.

    1. Perhaps, the Ancient Near East was the originator of this practice? In my army at least!

    2. Like most things, the use of the 'Shieldwall' was obviously a prior method forgotten about and then re-'invented' by some crafty chap at a later date.

Realising he needed to change the original name, for the purposes of trademark and intellectual property rights, he took the practice of forming a wall of shields and renamed it as the Shieldwall - then promptly sold the invention to the highest bidder.

His descendants also discovered Greek fire, invented Gunpowder, and authored the principles of The Art of War. There's also suggestions that Da Vinci stole some of their ideas concerning armoured vehicles, underwater travel and human flight.
